Upgrade of 7-year-old machine from Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS to 18.04.1 LTS

Updated 09-06-2018 at 08:07 PM by flshope (clarification)

I recently upgraded my primary computer from Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS to 18.04.1 LTS (hardware summary below). I have the machine set up for dual-booting with Ubuntu and Debian 9.5 from separate hard drives, each with its own Grub installation. My preferred window manager is Gnome Flashback although I had been using Unity for a while toward the end of 16.04.

As I have done in the past, I installed the 18.04 upgrade using the Update Manager (UM). The upgrade process went smoothly in terms...

LFS 8.2 Done

Posted 09-04-2018 at 10:10 AM by rsmereka

On the weekend of Aug 24, 1018, I completed my first LFS system. It is based on version 8.2, i386, no systemd, no separate boot partition, BIOS boot on an old Asus GX73JW-XT1 (ROG) laptop. Only the wired network driver is compiled into the kernel. To the base system, I added the BLFS packages wget, make-ca, pciutils and fcron. I was going to build the system up from there but the very next week, LFS 8.3 came out so I imaged the disk using Clonezilla and started from scratch once again

Bisecting a kernel

Sometimes you find yourself doing things that you would previously have considered as only suitable for geeks.

I don't consider it particularly geeky to build your own kernel. When I was starting out with Linux, hardware was pretty limited, and building a custom kernel was often the best way to get a quick boot. Nowadays I prefer to use the stock kernel if there is one, but two of my regular distros (Crux and LFS) require a hand-rolled kernel.

I have always regarded...

ExTiX 18.9 – “The Ultimate Linux System” – with LXQt 0.12.0, Refracta Tools, Calamares Installer and kernel 4.18.5-exton – a non-efi Build

Posted 09-01-2018 at 10:58 AM by exton (Exton's Blog)

I have made a new extra version of ExTiXThe Ultimate Linux System. I call it ExTiX 18.9 LXQt Live DVD. It is for non-efi computers and VirtualBox/VMware. I.e. you can use the Calamares Installer also in for example VirtualBox and VMware. Which means that you can install ExTiX in any language.

ABOUT
ExTiX 18.9 LXQt DVD 64 bit is based on Debian and Ubuntu 18.04.1 Bionic Beaver. The original system includes the Desktop Environment Gnome. After removing Gnome I have installed...

Getting rid of " ERROR: ld.so: object 'libgtk3-nocsd.so.0' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (cannot open shared object file): ignored"

Apparently I got rid of this message popping up every now and then on some scripts (calling things like hsetroot, feh, I'm not sure which triggered it, but I'm almost certain it wasn't a single thing) by installing a somewhat "hidden" i386 package on Debian:

Code:
sudo apt-get install libgtk3-nocsd0:i386
I saw about it here:
