I have a Visioneer 3300 parallel port flat-bed scanner. Works great for the two or three times a month I scan documents. I have the scanner connected to my old NT4 box because with a parallel port, SANE does not support the scanner and never will. The NT4 box is networked and I easily save the scanned documents to my primary Slackware box. In all, works just fine, costs nothing additional to operate.

Then again, sure would be nice to move that old computer out of the office. :)

I migrated that same NT4 system into a VirtualBox virtual machine. Works great. The OSE version of VirtualBox does not support parallel ports. The PUEL version does not either, but does support USB. Yet even with a parallel port to USB converter, the scanner won't work in my virtual NT4 --- no decent USB support. W2K has USB support, and I have a W2K virtual machine, but I would have to run the PUEL version of VirtualBox rather than the OSE version and I have to buy a parallel port to USB gizmo. Even then, the scanner will not be recognized as anything familiar.

Yes, buying a new USB scanner is an option, but then I'd have One More Functioning Computer Device Sitting On The Shelf. :(

Ideally, I'd like to find a way to run the scanner in Slackware rather than through my networked NT4 box. I'm looking for ideas, hacks, whatever. I can survive just fine with my current setup, but the technical challenge of finding a hack . . . .

Hi folks,

I've been working with *nix since about 1989, starting with HP-UX. Also have been a sysadmin on Alliant, old SunOS, Solaris, IRIX, AIX, and probably a few more I've forgotten about. I had played with RedHat on SPARC and with OpenBSD and so forth a little, but didn't get too deep into Linux until I took a job in a RedHat (RHEL 3/4/5) shop nearly 3 years ago.

At the moment I'm studying for the RHCE exam. I'm supposed to go to a boot camp course in January but it's a hard cert and I'm weak in some areas -- especially hardware, kernel, selinux. For the job I mostly install and configure open source software. We compile a lot of our own, especially for the older systems.
the kernel sources and headers are installed, so that isnt the problem.
A previous person suggested running 'hg update 5886' to downgrade the version of the driver, but this revision turned out not to exist.

Hi guys,

I only ask, since I've been hit by a blizzard of previously unencountered boot-up problems since acquiring an Acer Aspire AMD64 dual core desktop the other day. It's the only thing I've changed from my prior Intel-based family of chips, so seems a likely culprit. Or maybe it's some video card or something similar which is making the system freeze on boot. All was well until I tried to install Slackware 12.1 and Fedora 10 on Sda1 and Sda3 respectively (SATA hard drive SD is 320Gb in total). Sda2 is Debian Etch running like a Swiss watch (as ever). Boot loader is Grub from the Debian install. Only clue in the boot menue is that both Slackware and Fedora have multiple instances displayed in the bootable kernel choice part of the process, even though the kernals listed are all the same.

Any ideas, guys?

If the files are deleted, they show up again when the panel is restarted (killall gnome-panel) or when the system is rebooted.
I can't find any settings in OpenOffice.org 3.0 that would automatically add the files to the Documents folder. Any ideas as to where I should look to stop the automatic formation of the templates?

Hi,

I am having this problem with F 10. First I get the infamous message: Could not detect stabilization, waiting 10 seconds. at the beginning of the booting process. then after I initiate startx, I use gnome, all works fine and only for few minutes and the system freezes. At first the mouse freezes, then after 30 seconds or so, the mouse's cursor can move but clicks are ineffective, not even Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, or Ctrl+Alt+Del. I have to do hard reset.

I use a Toshiba Satellite laptop, A135-S2386.

hey guys, I'm in a bit of a bind.. well a big bind.

I installed ubuntu hardy recently and got everything rolling pretty good, but then I noticed some random lockups and slow boot times. I checked my logs and the only thing that seemed out of place was tons of lines:

Code:

Nov 25 12:22:24 mike-work kernel: [ 383.343214] eth1: (82593) System Error occurred (0)

also some lines of this:

Code:

Nov 25 12:18:25 mike-work kernel: [  141.692480] 0000:05:07.0: tulip_stop_rxtx() failed (CSR5 0xfc06c012 CSR6 0xff970111)

So I'm assuming my problems are coming from that. It freezes so often now that I can't even get to a desktop, but when I was still able to the only thing I knew to do was go to the graphical network settings and disable eth1 to no avail. Next I tried going to the interfaces file in /etc and commented out eth1... but that didn't help either.

So I'm stuck, I posted on UF, but no answer.

If it makes a difference eth1 is supposedly referring to my onboard LAN card and I even tried turning it off in bios.

this is what ifconfig says about it

Code:

eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:4c:69:6e:75:79
          Interrupt:19 Base address:0xa400

any tips would be appreciated... and a fix would be awesome :)

Thanks
Mike

I've been clicking the random blog button in hopes that I will find an interesting article or linux related pondering that somebody has posted. However, more often than not, I come across questions that people are asking. Why ask technical linux questions in your blog? Is it a way of storing your question so you can look back on it later and research it? Or are people just testing out the blog system? Either way, I like knowing I have a blog here. It gives me a place to post interesting things that I come across or what I plan on doing.
