Command-line control of network activation and deactivation

Posted 12-12-2016 at 01:33 PM by flshope

It took me a while to find this, so I thought I would post it. After searching through various sources, I finally took the time to read all of the hundred or so lines you get from 'apropos network'.

A terminal command to activate or deactive networking is

Code:
nmcli networking on
nmcli networking off
Under Ubuntu I usually depend on a networking control icon that appears on the tool bar of the indicator applet, but sometimes the icon is missing. I...

Ubuntu OS upgrades usually degrade function on older machines

Posted 10-29-2016 at 09:07 PM by flshope
Updated 12-15-2016 at 07:37 PM by flshope (Add to list of Ubuntu 16.04 anomalies)

I have two machines running Ubuntu, one a 5-year old Pogo Linux desktop ("Pogo2011" running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS) and the other an 8-year old HP notebook ("HP2008" running Ubuntu 14.04). To date, I have gone through 10 Ubuntu installs or major version upgrades (including 4 on a 2003 Pogo Linux desktop, which I finally moved to Debian to keep it alive ("Pogo2003" running Debian 8.6)).

It has been my experience that Ubuntu OS upgrades do not generally produce...

Gnuplot aborts Ubuntu 16.04 LTS upgrade installer

Posted 09-16-2016 at 02:02 PM by flshope

A week ago I decided to proceed with the upgrade from Ubuntu 14.04 LTS to 16.04 LTS. I always dread having to do these upgrades because it always means trouble, and this one was no exception.

As instructed by the release notes

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XenialXerus/ReleaseNotes

I started from the Update Manager, which offers the LTS upgrade once it has been made available three or four months after the initial release in April. I have made it a practice...

Emacs rectangle search/replace

Posted 08-21-2016 at 08:43 PM by flshope

I use Emacs to write code occasionally, mostly Fortran. A common thing I need to do is search and replace everywhere in a region confined to a rectangle within the text. An example is altering an existing code from Fortran 77 format to Fortran 90, specifically changing all of the Cs in column one (indicating comments) to !s. In Emacs terminology, this is a rectangle of width 1 character and as high as the number of lines in the code.

I have had difficulty figuring out how to do this...

Using an HP-2133 with an external display under Ubuntu 14.04

Posted 12-11-2015 at 10:23 AM by flshope
Updated 12-12-2015 at 08:49 PM by flshope (Fix typo)

This little note will be of interest to anyone (1) running an HP-2133 Mini-note PC (a little laptop), (2) with Ubuntu 14.04 and (3) Gnome Flashback, and (4) who wants to use it with an external Dell UltraSharp display. There must be maybe three such individuals (counting me) between earth and the Andromeda galaxy -- I include the end-points of the interval.

The 2133 has a nine-inch diagonal (viewable) screen. Although the display is crisp and readable, I am no longer pushing 70 (I'm...
