Difficulty resetting the default browser in Debian/Xfce

Posted 03-21-2020 at 01:48 PM by flshope

This blog entry refers to Debian 10.3 and Xfce 4.12 on a desktop machine.

On a whim, I decided to reset my default browser from Chromium (Version 80.0.3987.132) to Firefox (version 68.6.0esr). Shortly thereafter, I decided to go back to Chromium and reset the default at Xfce menu item

Code:
Applications/Settings/Settings Manager/Preferred Applications/Web Browser
Then I clicked on a link in a daily email in Thunderbird for my local newspaper. The link opened...

Debian 10 Upgrade on 8-year-old desktop machine is successful but with anomalies

Posted 11-12-2019 at 01:54 PM by flshope
Updated 11-23-2019 at 12:00 PM by flshope (correct arithmetic error)

This post is a summary of two anomalous results from upgrading to Debian 10 on my primary desktop computer Pogo2011. The machine was purchased new from Pogo Linux in 2011 with Ubuntu 11.04 pre-installed. It is now set up for dual booting from either Ubuntu or Debian, each OS booting from a separate hard drive and each with its own Grub installation. Prior to the Debian 10 upgrade, the OS was Debian 9.11. At the end of this post is a machine hardware summary.

I spent considerable time...

Upgrade of HP 2133 Mini-note PC from Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04

Posted 03-06-2019 at 02:04 PM by flshope

Background:

I have a 2008 HP 2133 Mini-note PC laptop running Ubuntu 14.04.5 with the Gnome Flashback desktop environment. A hardware summary is given below. In normal useage, I run the machine with an external display, external keyboard, and external mouse via a Netgear GCS1724 KVM switch.

I have been delaying the upgrade to 16.04 because of previous upgrade difficulties and because of the age of the machine (~11 years). The upgrade software for 14.04 would not run...

2018 iMac with High Sierra sometimes boots with no cursor -- a fix

Posted 01-06-2019 at 06:09 PM by flshope
Updated 01-13-2019 at 06:43 PM by flshope

I purchased an iMac all-in-one machine in June 2018. An immediate problem I encountered was that the machine sometimes booted with no cursor. The mouse and keyboard are both wireless. The keyboard always worked, but the mouse was rendered useless whenever the machine booted with no cursor, which was intermittent. Turning the mouse off and on (after fully booting) generated a screen acknowledgment that the mouse status had changed but did not bring up the cursor. The voice assistant Siri was no help...

Upgrade of 7-year-old machine from Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS to 18.04.1 LTS

Posted 09-04-2018 at 06:05 PM by flshope
Updated 09-06-2018 at 08:07 PM by flshope (clarification)

I recently upgraded my primary computer from Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS to 18.04.1 LTS (hardware summary below). I have the machine set up for dual-booting with Ubuntu and Debian 9.5 from separate hard drives, each with its own Grub installation. My preferred window manager is Gnome Flashback although I had been using Unity for a while toward the end of 16.04.

As I have done in the past, I installed the 18.04 upgrade using the Update Manager (UM). The upgrade process went smoothly in terms...
