Viva la difference. Again?

Posted 09-09-2010 at 08:34 AM by rich_c

Following on from a couple of other people’s blog posts debating whether the wide variety of available Linux distros is a good or bad thing, I thought I’d do a quick comparison of three fairly similar distros. There are subtle differences that might suit some users’ needs so that one is, for them, better than the others.

The three I’d like to compare are SimplyMEPIS, PCLinuxOS and Linux Mint (Debian). All three are arguably very similar in that they aim to provide an easy to use...

Shooting Themselves in the Foot?

Posted 09-08-2010 at 06:31 AM by dixiedancer (A Simple Kid's Opinion)

The latest versions of Ubuntu and Fedora seem to work alot better on newer machines than older ones like mine. In many ways that's good, but I wonder if Canonical and Red hat aren't shooting themselves in the foot somewhat. Here's why:

Ubuntu and Fedora are intended to be "newbie friendly," an ideal choice for those just starting out in Linux. But one of the main reasons people look for an alternative OS is because they can't afford a Mac, and the newer versions of Windows...

More detail. One of the problems is the runme.php script in the sheevaplug-installer package. It's the script to be run on Linux, which is meant to restore all the correct environment variables and the Ubuntu to the plug. Why PHP? Why not a bash shell script? The first time I ran it, it just echoed the file's contents to the terminal. That was because it had <? at the beginning, instead of <?php. I knew enough to fix that. But then it came up with two errors: one about the line regarding which...

Ubuntu One Music Store: Already a drop-in iTunes replacement

Posted 09-07-2010 at 07:04 PM by Kenny_Strawn (Kenny the one-teen comittee to stamp out Proprietary $uckware)

I just recently tried browsing the Ubuntu One Music Store to see just what was available, and found hundreds of popular titles and artists (at least in the Maverick Meerkat).

The software center is also getting a similar facelift: You can now opt to purchase proprietary software via the Software Center (although the software that's there for a fee is branded as such and quarantined dead-away from the FOSS in the store), something the major software makers will really like.

Well, that didn't last long did it? A couple of days or so to screw up my SheevaPlug. I had ARMedslack-13.1 running on it perfectly from a USB stick, and then I decided it would be better on an SD card, leaving the USB socket available for other things. I won't go into all the details of what I tried (can't remember them all, anyway ), but everything failed. There are two options to reset it to, and I chose the wrong one. An installer, involving running a PHP script, failed. I tried all the solutions...
