Weird conflict/dependency/maybe-bug hell with Debian Bookworm and RTL8188FTV (0bda:f179)

There's some weird situation, for me at least, where apparently I can't install the headers of linux 6, due to failure in dkms building the module for this USB wireless adapter. Which in turn depends on the headers themselves being installed, if I'm not misunderstanding, which may well be the case.

Additionally, there were some reported bugs in some stuff, G++ and/or GCC, while updating from frankendebian-pre-Bookworm to what may be a more proper bookworm release. Although I think...

How I got my obscure Realtek USB wireless adapter to work

Posted 09-27-2019 at 03:07 PM by the dsc (linux-related notes)
Updated 11-05-2020 at 02:40 PM by the dsc (more relevant things to add)

The device is " 0bda:f179 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. 802.11n," per lsusb. Using this driver:

https://github.com/kelebek333/rtl8188fu

Not the deb files, the dkms path. (Speaking of path, I have the impression it has explicitly coded paths and needs to be installed from /usr/src)

Including the added settings regarding USB plugging and power management issues, AND the advice on this forum:

One of the most common complaints on LQ Forums and other Linux forums is about wifi cards or adapters not being recognised in Linux.

Here are some typical lamented cries:

But it works perfectly in Windows. Why doesn’t it work in Linux?

How do I get my Ralink, Atheros, Broadcom, Realtek, Edimax etc wifi card working in Ubuntu/Mint/Debian etc?

Ad-hoc wifi networking?????

Posted 10-21-2012 at 10:36 AM by davetesc

Each time I think I'm getting somewhere I try to do something new and realise how little I know!!!
Having found a cheap usb wifi dongle I thought it would be easy to connect my two laptops so I could just send files between the two without using a memory stick, guess again, obviously I'm missing the simplest of steps but plodding on. :-)
