Cat Silliness

Posted 08-02-2014 at 01:17 PM by ttk (Unpopular Positions: One Geek's Take)

Who'd have thunk it? Simon, our laid-back happy-go-lucky orange kitty, is a scrapper!

Since we moved to this property in 2008, our cats have been hemmed in by the territories of cats from the surrounding neighborhood. If they ventured too far from the house, sometimes while still on the property, they'd get their asses kicked.

Sam, our big grey tomcat, held the other cats' territories out on the periphery for a couple of years, but he'd come out on the losing end of...

Time::TAI::Simple

Posted 07-30-2014 at 10:09 PM by ttk (Unpopular Positions: One Geek's Take)

Two things: First, my wife tells me this blog's interface sucks, and she hates trying to read it. Apparently it's horrible for users who do not have an LQ account. I'm kicking the tires on some alternatives.

Second, I've uploaded Time::TAI::Simple to CPAN. It provides a high-resolution count of seconds elapsed since the beginning of the epoch, much like Time::HiRes, but un-"corrects" for the IETF's leapsecond adjustments.

Datashack Stirrings

Posted 07-20-2014 at 08:54 AM by ttk (Unpopular Positions: One Geek's Take)

One of my ongoing projects, for the purpose of facilitating other projects, is the conversion of our wellhouse to a "datashack" and light workshop. The goal is to run various computers in it without introducing undue noise or heat to the main house.

It's been a while in the coming, but it's coming. Yesterday marked two big steps: I moved my computer cabinet from the garage (where I basically never got to run the systems mounted in it) to the wellhouse, and I installed...

A completely uninteresting, self-centered whinefest

Posted 06-19-2014 at 01:37 AM by ttk (Unpopular Positions: One Geek's Take)

It seems fitting that my first new blog entry in months should be a means of procrastination. I have lofty goals for this space, but they are thus far mostly unfulfilled. This study in self-pity shouldn't be here, but I feel the need to write about it, and I can't think of another place to do so. Maybe I need a journal? Something where I can write the stuff that doesn't matter?

If you hadn't figured it out already, you can refrain from reading this post and your life will be no...

Reflections: Progress on OpenSSL, and Greybeard Wisdom

Posted 02-01-2014 at 03:01 PM by ttk (Unpopular Positions: One Geek's Take)
Updated 02-01-2014 at 03:03 PM by ttk

I'm finally pulling out of a months-long depressive funk, and touched my openssl patch again. On one hand openssl isn't exactly pleasant to work with (hardly any comments, bizarre formatting, obscure internal interfaces), but it felt good to be writing some C and making progress on my #1 project.

In addition to writing the code, I really should be documenting the whys and hows of the changes, like I promised my friend Chris. I didn't remember that until just now. Perhaps enumerating...
