Being a geek sometimes saves the day

So, there we were, sitting in front of a PC about to do some actual work. But we couldn't, because we needed instructions from a particular e-mail. Said e-mail could not be reached online since it was sent using POP, not IMAP.

The computer with the super important instructions did not have any VNC connection to the outer world, so we could not simply log in that way, start Thunderbird and check out the e-mail from a distance.

What do you do? Take the bus to where the...

Use any widget theme with Krita, outside KDE with a tiny cheat

Posted 06-23-2015 at 01:12 AM by the dsc (linux-related notes)
Updated 10-18-2017 at 12:54 PM by the dsc (update)

export KDE_FULL_SESSION=true && krita

It may have other collateral effects I haven't figured yet, not only on krita, but perhaps even elsewhere. Possibly DANGEROUS.

Be warned that other widget themes besides plastique and oxygen are known to be often broken outside KDE, that's the reason for such theme-enforcing policy. If your preferred theme doesn't work on Krita, don't complain about that to them, they've manifestly done that in order to avoid trying to make...

Second day of summer

Posted 06-22-2015 at 04:42 PM by onebuck

Well we are having some wet weather here in central Illinois. We are under a Tornado watch until 23:00 with expectations of severe weather throughout the night. I have been through my share of tornado and respect them very much. Preparedness is important!
Sun is shining now but the radar shows the storm traffic/path and we will be hit by some bad storms. I am tired of all the rain. We are at 11.5 inches and this is the last week in June. More than we need.

I cannot get caught...

One member on andex.exton.net wrote this today about my KitKat 4.4.4 build 6 of 150606.

I've been testing the 4.4.4 Kitkat version 6 on my Asus Vivobook with Intel HD Graphics and touchscreen. The touchscreen works perfectly and supports multitouch. Finally a build that works great with with games. I played Clash of Clans with no hassle. I ran most of the graphics benchmark apps available.

I had a persistent "Unfortunately, your app has stopped" error problem

Interface reverts to different zone in firewalld RHEL7 (SOLVED)

We recently setup a couple of new DMZ servers so decided to use zones "internal" and "external" rather than zone "public" (which RHEL7 uses by default). We also set "internal" as the "default" in firewalld.

We used firewall-cmd to assign our em1 interface (this is first embedded NIC, on some systems this might still be eth0 instead) to the external zone. We then assigned em2 (second embedded NIC, this might be eth1 instead)...
