Posted 12-07-2009 at 02:21 PM by kcoriginal

I re-found Red Hat 9 - "Shrike" the other day. The Red Hat site had some seriously detailed manuals that go with that. Clear, large, good.

Red Hat 9, I would call, the first of the modern Linux distributions. I know that Debian was in good shape about that time... but... overall the market-share wasn't so hot for Deb at that time.

Now, I am an ubuntu fanatic...!

But, if you feel like ubuntu is masking too much of the nuts and bolts, yet, still...

Upgrading from openSUSE11.1 to openSUSE11.2

Posted 12-07-2009 at 12:58 PM by clvic

I'm starting my first (significant) post on this blog, reporting my experience on openSUSE upgrade, from 11.1 to 11.2.
I started from this useful post:
http://lizards.opensuse.org/2009/10/...-11-1-to-11-2/
that basically shows how to do this task by using the command line tool "zypper".

I made some variation to this procedure: I did not want to burn a DVD and I did not want to perform a network install.
That's simple!...

Default installation of DVD pack openSUSE won't able to play video's of formats *.avi, *.vob, *.flv, *.wmv .... etc.

TO install the codecs needed to watch DVDs, handle MP3s, etc. follow this.

1. YaST -> “Software” -> “Software Repositories”
2. Click “Add”
3. Select “Community Repositories”
4. Select “Packman Repository”

opensource is good

Posted 12-06-2009 at 04:45 PM by Web31337 (In The Middle Of Nowhere [edK's blog])

it is always good to know someone is interested in your opensource product, someone is using it.
have this great feeling when viewing access logs on one of mine, which was first i created and published @ sf.net(was in april/may 2009, when sf.net had more eye-friendly design).
I see some unique visitors to project site everyday, but i want to increase that count. So i need to come up with a time to resume coding that project.
What i really want to tell that it's nice to see someone...

Security and convenience.

Posted 12-06-2009 at 08:47 AM by rich_c

Having recently seen some advice been given out stating that it is OK to use the root user id as a day-to-day account, I decided to seek some knowledgeable advice on this.

My requests for opinions on this matter attracted some comments from some pretty credible sources, including people from IBM and Sun Microsystems in roles that would qualify them to comment! No-one advocated the use of the root account for anything more than tasks that made it absolutely necessary! The use of...
