The announcement that Ubuntu is to seperate from GNOME from its new release is perhaps the perfect answer to the spat which took place last month over Canonicals contributions to the GNOME desktop. Personally, however, I feel that this move comes as no surprise and is 100 % the correct thing to do in the circumstances. From licensing H.264 to OEMs, to the partner repository to the Software Centre, Canonical has consistently seen itself as destinct from the larger Linux community. This is the latest...

I'm beginning to lose faith in Arch due to the lack of help here on LQ

Here it goes: I posted this thread some time ago and have renamed it a few times since then. I did get help getting Arch to boot (and turns out I had to re-build the initrd). However, that is not enough.

I can get to a twm session -- by typing 'startx' at the shell. But trying to start GNOME (or GDM) -- both of which I have installed, returns an error that a DBus configuration file isn't found -- when I have DBus installed too.

An Old Toy

I was wrong about my Arch lappy being my first laptop...I found an old toy "laptop" of mine that was laying around in some boxes of my old toys from when I was in my single-digits/early tweens. It's one of those "educational/learning" toys...

X dual head, one graphic card

X configuration

Goal : 2 separate X screens working as dual-head(like 2 mice, 2 keyboards), powered by one graphic card(nvidia ion, 1st gen).

features used :
  • X multiple screens (Zaphod mode?)
  • MPX (multiple input X)

First configure the X server through xorg.conf :
Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier     "Monitor"

According to this article, GNOME Shell is making more progress than I originally thought. However, Shell 2.91 is not in the original location that I thought it was in.

I once thought that the version of GS in Florian MŁellner's screenshot wasn't uploaded to Git -- yet. When I submitted a bug saying that changes to the Shell weren't getting pushed to GNOME Git, I got pointed to this:
