Data recovery from CD-ROM with Debian 6 Squeeze - ddrescue

I happen to have a huge amount of pictures but they are stored on CD-ROM's which over time start to loose data. Some after 3 years some are still readable after 12 years.

Nevertheless I want to recover as much data as possible and store it on my NAS. Now the task is not so straightforward as expected. Again the sheer mass of information sometimes hides the most obvious, or what is obvious to me was not to the developers or editors of tutorials.

Major disk trouble DRDY ERR and UNC error

Just happened:

Got a nasty error on my laptop running Debian Squeeze. Unable to boot further than initramfs with errors preventing the file system from mounting.

Nasty bugger. Seems to be a bad sector on my HDD. Causes several attempts to read and finally fails with
DRDY ERR and subsequent UNC error triggering the errors:
unable to mount rootfs etc.

Now trying with the installer CD-ROM in recovery mode. A bit nasty as I have unsaved data...

Silly problem - KDE 4 locks system upon login

Well finding out abut how to convert your videos yesterday and today had me investigate into a weird problem for a couple hours.

Converting a lot of videos took a huge lot of disk space ending up in filling my HDD.

Then I was unable to log into the GUI via the KDE logon screen. When I did first it re-showed the logon screen and on the second attempt crashed. Not even able to open a console.

Took me a while to figure that one out and only...

ACER Aspire One A150 running dual boot Linux and WIN XP now

Had some time to fiddle with my netbook lately.

As I use it only for work abroad to connect to the internet and listen to music it was not a priority to change the OS on that one too. And sometimes it comes in handy to have a native Windows System running somewhere.

So I decided on setting up LINUX Debian 6.0 Squeeze to dual boot with Windows XP SP3.

First I had to generate a bootable USB stick following the instructions given in the debian.org tutorial....
