Partitions - MBR vs. GPT

Posted 07-10-2017 at 08:32 AM by hydrurga
Updated 07-22-2017 at 03:31 AM by hydrurga

The two main partitioning schemes used on Linux and Windows/DOS are MBR and, more recently, GPT. This article doesn't cover the Mac's original Apple Partition Scheme and additional partition schemes used by various other operating systems.

To understand partitions, it is important to remember that storage devices divide up their space into sectors which are traditionally 512 bytes in length. However, since 2010, most large hard disks (called Advanced Format (AF)) now have physical...

Updated 07-10-2017 at 07:38 PM by zapwai (It's a never-ending list)

I picked these up from using crunchbang; my favorite macros / hot keys are as follows.
The windows key is meta.

meta + e = editor (emacs)
meta + f = file manager
meta + w = web (firefox)
meta + t = terminal (konsole)

meta + d = desktop (minimize all windows)
meta + m = minimize window
meta + o = maximize window

meta + k = simple-screen-recorder (though lately I just use ffmpeg directly in a script)

Weird WM troubles? Delete that folder!

Posted 07-09-2017 at 07:19 PM by zapwai

Today was at least the second time that I've removed a folder in my home directory, such as .kde, to fix my issue. The first time was probably six years ago in Mandriva. Somehow I forget to even try this. If I'm looking through log files and can't find the issue, and the OS is otherwise fine, especially if another WM does work, this should be an obvious step to try.

Of course it's wiser to move it, that way you can just copy over some of your old settings.

This weekend I finally got it submitted!

I feel like it should be a huge milestone, but it gives me...

How To dual boot, triple boot or multiboot Linux with Windows in a simple way and be happy

Posted 07-07-2017 at 07:44 AM by exton (Exton's Blog)

In a instruction from 170707 I will show you how easy it is to have several Linux systems installed on one computer together with for example Windows 10. The configuration is so simple a ten year old child can do it.

BACKGROUND
Ubuntu and all Linux systems based on Ubuntu (such as Linux Mint) uses Grub2 as boot manager. Also Debian and most other Linux systems use Grub2. Grub2 works differently from the old Grub Legacy.

Configuring Grub2 – Example for non-UEFI...
