Auto-block ssh brute force attacks using built-in tools (OpenBSD and Linux)

Posted 08-30-2012 at 01:28 AM by rocket357 (Musings on technology, philosophy, and life in the corporate world)

I've run a cool trick for a while on my OpenBSD firewall at home, where traffic from any given ip address and port 22 on the firewall is rate limited. If an ip exceeds the given rate, it is put into a ban list (table, actually) that the firewall is configured to drop all traffic from. It works well, and the same functionality can be setup in Linux, too.

To set it up on OpenBSD (this is lifted verbatim from the OpenBSD website pf manual, hence port www instead of port ssh):

Why to NOT buy Western Digital

Posted 08-29-2012 at 03:28 PM by Skaperen

Why not? Because Western Digital will NOT support their firmware upgrades:

In this case, the drive itself was out of warranty. However, the Western Digital software and web site proceeded to urge the owner to upgrade the firmware. Then the drive running on the new firmware did not work.

It seems Western Digital wants to brick your out-of-warranty drives...

xterm to display wide font properly

Posted 08-28-2012 at 03:02 PM by ted_chou12

I was trying to use export LANG=zh_TW.UTF8, so that my command line at least give me some feedback in chinese. But despite of a readable font, it doesnt display correctly, because the characters seem to show up with spaces inbetween. That looked ugly. So I searched on the web to customize the font in my ./~XDefaults finally:
!xsession*windows_manager: icewm-rox
!xsession*sound_server: jackd

xterm*title: Xterm
xterm*font: -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--18-120-100-100-c-90-iso10646-1

So this blog is mostly a place for me to keep notes on particularly annoying problems that were solved after a fair bit of pain.

So my current desktop set up has three sound devices. There is the onboard sound card, there is the hdmi output from my NVidia graphics card, and then theres the PCI Xonar DS card I bought recently.

Which is where the problem started.. I wanted to get the sound to work through only through the PCI sound card, but whenever the computer booted,...

Printer Issues

Posted 08-27-2012 at 07:07 PM by aardvark99

After many months of frustration I finally solved a niggling problem with printing.

The number of copies options had been stuck on 2 in Okular and LibreOffice for a long time which I had to keep manually fixing each time I used these products. Couldn't find where the sticky option was. Yesterday I thought to look in the .cups folder and there it was ... copies=2. Edited it to ... copies=1 and the problem has goen away. At least until the next time I set copies to 2 and forget where...
