LFS 7.1 on Ubuntu 12.04

Posted 07-21-2012 at 11:33 AM by druuna
Updated 01-31-2014 at 03:23 AM by druuna (Updated to current situation.)

I noticed that a lot of people try to build LFS using Ubuntu as host and are struggling, this article describes how to make Ubuntu compliant, create the partition and lfs user and set up the toolchain (basically chapters 1 to 5.9).

Warning: The latest stable LFS version is not 7.1.
The information below can be used as a reference for newer LFS versions. Do keep in mind that steps/actions are probably (slightly?) different in newer versions!

Going through the old stuff again. Found the old Nslu2 with the installed original firmware. Found an article about installing Debian 6 on it. You know you have to try it. Success at that. Installed Boa to use as a local server. maybe some home automation with an arduino interfaced to it.

Found my old Palm pdas and seemed to remember that they could be a dumb terminal. Hmmmm. Perfect for the Nslu2. Installed ptelnet on the units. So you know one has to try it with the Nslu2. After...

A puzzling observation...

Posted 07-15-2012 at 04:20 AM by rich_c

Recently, at work, I've been involved in/initiated a project to migrate some desktop PCs to Linux. Naturally, I sought advise from various Linux community sources including here. A lot of the responses I got quite rightly pointed out potential pitfalls. A few responses pointed out positive aspects. There were even responses that were, to me, entirely negative and seemed to pooh-pooh the idea that there could possibly be a problem with our current Windows desktops that Linux could resolve....
