Posted 05-18-2009 at 03:56 AM by brianL

I've just booted into XP Pro on my laptop for the first time in I don't know how long. Weeks? Maybe months? And it feels strange. A bit like a long-term Windows user must feel on first using GNU/Linux. At least I have Cygwin to give some sense of familiarity. There's no doubt that I feel more at home on Linux, in particular Slackware, than I do on Windows. But, having said that, I still intend to keep XP, for the sake of variety. But again, if it wasn't already on, and I had the choice to install...

Troubleshooting

Posted 05-17-2009 at 09:20 PM by David1357

When you are troubleshooting problems with your Linux installation, there are several utilities available that are not obvious to the first time user.

The first thing you will want to have access to during your troubleshooting is something called the "terminal" or the "console" depending on who is doing the speaking or writing. In either case, you should be able to start an instance of the "terminal" by accessing your menu. If you cannot find it, you...

Installing Java 6 JDK on Ubuntu 9

Posted 05-15-2009 at 07:45 PM by Moorlie

This turned out to be easier than I hoped. It turns out that the Wubi install of Ubuntu that I am using has all the package repositories I needed to install Sun Java 6 JDK. The following command was all that was required:

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre sun-java6-jdk

More info can be found here:

Dual booting Ubuntu 9 on HP Pavilion laptop

Posted 05-15-2009 at 07:18 PM by Moorlie
Updated 05-15-2009 at 07:21 PM by Moorlie

After much deliberation I decided to take the plunge and install Ubuntu on my laptop today. It's a basic HP Pavilion sporting an AMD Turino64 processor and an nVidia 7150m graphics card.

Then I got cold feet and decided I did not want to repartition my hard disk and run the risk of trashing my existing Vista install, too much work there. I opted to use Wubi, a Ubuntu installer that uses space on an existing Windows partition and adds a dual-boot menu.
