RIP Asus eeepc 1001ha

Posted 05-28-2022 at 03:42 PM by brianL

Recently booted this slow little ****er up, and got a splash screen announcing that the CMOS battery was dead. So I checked online what battery I needed, and how to replace it. Turned out I more or less had to take the whole thing to pieces to get at the battery. I'd already, a couple of years ago, taken it apart to replace the HDD with an SSD. This time involved even more disassembly. I was as gentle as possible, but two clips holding ribbon cables broke off, plus the motherboard was damaged. The...

A Blast From The Past

The first Linux distro I installed, dual-booting with XP Pro, was Slackware 10.0 (the last release to include GNOME (Thank "Bob"!). At the age of 59, I'd only been interested in and owned a computer for 2 years. Missed out on all the early stuff. The first distro I had any experience with was Knoppix, but I read it was not recommended for installation. So I bought the September, 2004, edition of Linux Format magazine, complete with Slackware 10.0 on 2 CD-ROMs. There was an article in the...

Posted 12-30-2020 at 05:13 AM by brianL

I had a thread about this in the Slackware forum ages ago. This Thinkpad X200 will happily run Slackware64 14.2 or current for a couple of months or so. Then it refuses to boot up fully, with any one of three errors at random. If it was only one error all the time, it would be easier to pin down the cause. I've done websearches on the errors - no luck.
To add to the confusion, it's run Kubuntu 20.04 (64-bit) for months now, with no problems.
It was bought refurbished, in very good...

Dual-booting Again

Posted 06-22-2018 at 06:10 AM by brianL

Thought I'd lost interest in using other distros ages ago, but since this T3600 has such a large HDD (1 TB), I'm having another go - with Ubuntu 16.04. Slackware & Ubuntu: offers a good contrast. No problems yet. Hope I don't get kicked out of the Slackware Fanboys Club for this.
