Linux - by kids and for kids. The small thing.

Posted 03-14-2009 at 09:32 PM by AGer (Void cries or bashing time)

The upgrade to KDE 4.2.1 and XFCE 4.6, being very successful all by itself, made me sure that Linux still is, well, childish. The big problem - how come desktop beauty does not play well with video -is discussed in the previous post. here comes the smaller problem - icon schemes in XFCE are broken.

Some menu items do not have icons; two buttons in the mixer do not have icons on them. It is a minor issue that will be fixed for sure promptly, right? Wrong.

Linux - by kids and for kids. The big thing.

I upgraded to KDE 4.2.1 and XFCE 4.6 in Slackware current. KDE got some fixes (as promised) and XFCE got some polish (all by surprise). The net result is that I spent almost a whole day in a vicious circle making configuration changes to KDE, switching to XFCE, making configuration changes there, and going back to KDE until I was reasonably sure that at this time I like XFCE better. Samba issues fixed and all relevant folders are now shared, OpenSSH up and running. Now I am upgrading the OS. This machine has been offline for several months, boy is that a lot of packages.

I just hope the software upgrade goes alright.

XP Reprieved

Posted 03-13-2009 at 09:47 AM by brianL

I've decided to keep XP Pro on my laptop. After all, it's never given me any trouble, it might come in useful, and I've loaded it up with Cygwin and other non-M$ stuff. I have no objections to the OS, only to the gang who make it.
I've gone back to using Slackware 12.2 after my little experiment with Slackware current. Chickened out, don't think I know enough yet to handle it.
