Even if they are masked (either by keyword or hard masked).

Recently, the Gentoo dev team decided that KDE-4.2 needs a newer version of Xorg in order to function (it's been working pretty well with the version of Xorg I have been using). Wouldn't be a big deal if I didn't need to unmask all packages related to the new version.

And of course, it won't display a list of said packages. Because god forbid that I'd have an easy time unmasking packages right? I either have...

Linux distro installs

I bought a Dell Mini 9 about a week ago.

I had issues getting it to connect to my home WAP. The first thing I do when I've such issues is to determine what's going on, usually by sniffing the network interface.

Tcpdump wasn't installed! This is the second time I've seen a default install not include such a critical piece of software. I installed Suse about a year ago and noticed the same thing.

I ended up going to my router and jacking the Dell into...

It's one of these days. Sometimes I feel like one of a small number of lemmings who have learned to turn right before they reach the edge of the cliff. Now we few lemmings are standing there, desperately trying to keep all the others from following their one-dimensional path to self-destruction. But is it really worth it?

Sometimes I feel that people have an inalienable right to their own stupidity. Users using Windows is natural selection at work. Let them go down. Don't try to help...

Bought a new Western Digital Elements Portable Hard Drive 250GB recently, purchased from Bond and Bond 2009-03-04 NZ$129 (see for an update on this post)

Failed to mount under ubuntu hardy, dmesg gave only:
usb 4-8: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 21

Googled for this dmesg (minus the address number), found:
