PostgreSQL reconfigure script

Posted 02-10-2010 at 09:54 AM by rocket357 (Musings on technology, philosophy, and life in the corporate world)
Updated 03-04-2011 at 09:42 AM by rocket357 (Added Version changelog to script)

UPDATE: Script has been revised and is available here

The following script is something I've written up to ease my duties as the PostgreSQL DBA for a large hosting company. It configures PostgreSQL according to whack-a-mole, and it auto-detects various resources such as system RAM, shared memory settings, etc...

The script currently supports Linux and OpenBSD (FreeBSD coming soon!).

Code:
#!/bin/sh

Newbies As Guinea Pigs?

Posted 02-10-2010 at 05:58 AM by dixiedancer (A Simple Kid's Opinion)

There is no excuse, in my opinion, for putting unstable, experimental beta software as a default in a ready release of a Linux distro that claims to be "beginner-friendly," as Ubuntu has done with Karmic Koala! But not uncommonly, I hear them complaining that too many Linux users rely on the graphical interface and don't bother to learn the command line. It's kind of ironic, dontchya think? You wanted to make Linux easy enough for the non-geeky...

SourceForge "removes" ban set at 25.01.2010

Posted 02-08-2010 at 01:59 PM by Web31337 (In The Middle Of Nowhere [edK's blog])

It seems like yesterday SF.net decided to give up with forced ban(more: SF blog, my post) of Syria, Iran, Sudan, North Korea and Cuba, and now they provide users with option "Export Control", allowing to opt in or opt out for ban.
By default, all projects have that ban enabled.
Read this @ sf.net blog.
But you know, the way it's done... The way it was done initially can only point me to "Prepare for unforeseen consequences" (C) G-Man, Half-Life 2 Episode...
