About Linux software RAID - overview

Until not long ago, Linux was not able to boot from partitions under RAID. That meant that /boot partition can not be mirrored, but the rest of the data can. If that is how system was set-up, then all of the data was mirrored but there is no GRUB/boot setup on the spare HDD. You would need to copy data from /boot partition to "/boot2" (/boot partition on spare HDD) and install GRUB on spare HDD MBR. This can all be done from working system, no need to unplug anything.

Ants on my table

Posted 06-02-2010 at 10:53 AM by Mr-Bisquit

Code:
 Scream your little anty screams
At the terror of your anty dreams.
My giant finger
Your tiny brain
I hear you scream

on your anty town.
Your anty prayers
will not be heard
I'll crush your hopes
like they were a turd.
Scream your little anty screams
At the terror of your anty dreams.
Enjoy your final

A compact with quite a lot of features (must RTFM soon!).
I gave it a bit of a test run, using one of the easy "point & shoot" modes in the local cemetery....

Posted 06-02-2010 at 06:27 AM by bittner (Notes on Linux)

I had to calculate the Installed-Size for a .deb control file recently. Here is the solution I came up with:

Code:
dpkg-deb -c mypackage.deb | sed -e 's/.*root\s*//' -e 's/\s*2010-.*$//' | xargs | tr ' ' + | bc
What it does? The code tries to construct a calculation string and feeds it to the command line calculator bc as follows:
  1. use dpkg-deb to get the file size information out of the Debian package
  2. sed away all characters before and after the
