The GNU/Linux name controversy

Posted 11-29-2008 at 09:58 AM by eantoranz

About 23 years after the beginning of time (that would be like 1993), since GNU and Linux were put together as a Free OS, there's been a controversy about the way to call this (dysfunctional) couple.

On the red corner we have RMS, the FSF and others asking people to include "GNU" as part of the name when you are referring to a system that is working with Linux as the kernel and GNU on top of it to make it a "user usable" (weird, right?) system. One problem of this...

Drakeos custom fedora 8,9 build stuff

Posted 11-29-2008 at 03:53 AM by Drakeo

I spent many hours building a system for a professor of music at the U of I Ilinois. the Fedora distro is the one that planet ccrma uses for there repo. and they build all the very nice multimedia aps with the core.
I come to the conclusion that the big IBM. the one that got Bill Gates going has really put a hold on the FC.
I still do not understand why Stanford would use a system to build all the cool development music multimedia stuff on a distro that refuses to allow you to play...

Avoiding wxPython PrintPreview segmentation fault or double free error

Posted 11-28-2008 at 08:23 PM by dr_agon

applies to: Python, wxPython (v.2.8), wxWidgets, wx.PrintPreview, wx.Printout

When creating wx.PrintPreview class, you must pass 2 parameters of wxPrintout class (see doc)
If someone (like me) gets a silly idea of passing the same instance of wxPrintout class as both parameters, on closing the preview frame he will get segmentation fault or double free error.
Example (don't do this!):
class MyPrintout(wx.Printout):
  #rest of code

mepis 7

Posted 11-28-2008 at 07:36 PM by olderone

I have recently used the liveCD for Mepis 7 & found that I can play mp3's, jpg & even movie shots taken from my camera, copying from a CF card on the USB. I am very new to Linux & I would like to be able to connect to the internet wirelessly as I do with XP. So far no go. I have a Speedtouch 121g wireless adapter plugged into a USB socket. Can anyone tell me how I can do this, or is it not possible without having to install it on the hard drive. The router is WEP encrypted.
