Uhoh... ethernet card problems again...

Posted 03-30-2009 at 01:41 PM by shannonbay

So it turns out Slack 12.2 didn't really fix the card. However I found a driver (tg3) on Hardware4Linux.info so will try modprobe -vv tg3 next time eth0 disappears. Not sure if I would need to do anything else. If all else fails, perhaps it's a firmware issue as suggested.

Have downloaded the ATI vga module, will set that up later.

I forgot to mention that I figured out how to make lilo boot straight into Slackware - just comment out 'prompt' in lilo.conf and then...

Hardware update

Got my mouse scroll wheel working. Just uncomment the following line in /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
Code:
Option: "Protocol" "Auto"
As for the network card, it's still coming up dead on some bootups, but I discovered that it probably is a firmware issue. In my BIOS POST logs, there are regular occurrences of an NIC Failure. Will have to hunt around for firmware. It was suggested to me that power management might have something to do with it, but I didn't notice any...

Can MicroHoo topple Google?

Posted 07-31-2009 at 10:38 AM by pereb

Look out, Google; MicroHoo is coming to get you. Wednesday, the deal between Microsoft and Yahoo (“MicroHoo”) was finally signed, after months of speculation and discussion. The number two and number three search engines in the U.S. have joined forces and become one. They simply couldn’t stand to sit back and watch Google corner the market anymore. It was time to topple the giant.

Google is the undisputed heavyweight of search engines; it holds 65% of the search market in the U.S.,...

Automated MySQL backups

Lately I had two SQL servers crash and thankfully have implemented a pretty good backup solution using a script called AutoMySQLBackup, which uses mysqldump to create SQL dumps of your databases. Here is the play by play so you to can get back up and running with expedience. I am assuming the use of ubuntu in this tutorial as that is what I typically use, although the only real difference here is in the sudo command. If you are using a different distro just disregard any sudo's and login as root....

upgrade ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10

Posted 11-03-2009 at 11:01 AM by itbod

Uh Oh my ugrade manager says a new version of ubuntu is ready to download and install! I panic at this as the last time I upgraded to 9.04 I enounted so many problems I ended up installing from scratch losing all my data.

If there was an easy way to backup the entire system it would be brilliant. By the way, i used to run 8.10 which ran perfectly 9.04 crashes frequently, screen goes blank and will not recover causing me to do a hard re-boot which of course corrupts data. I asked...
