Ubuntu disaster (blank screen after software update), Debian recovery

Posted 12-26-2014 at 07:57 PM by flshope
Updated 01-06-2015 at 08:45 AM by flshope (Correcting directory of grub file)

A few weeks ago, I did a routine Ubuntu software update. When I rebooted after the update, all I got was a blank screen.

Actually, it was just my backup computer, a 2003 Pogo Linux desktop (http://www.pogolinux.com/) whose dated hardware is still working fine. The machine -- Pogo2003 -- was recently updated to Ubuntu 14.04, which caused me some initial display anomalies because Ubuntu dropped the Nvidia display driver I was using (Nvidia-96). The display was pretty messed up but not...

HP-2133 Upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04 -- an important prerequisite

Posted 11-22-2014 at 07:30 PM by flshope

The HP-2133 Mini-note PC is a laptop computer with a 9-in. viewable diagonal screen. It has a single-core 1.2 MHz processor with 2 GB RAM and a 120 GB disk. The machine came with SUSE Enterprise Desktop 10 installed, a poor choice because none of the peripherals worked. Prior to the present upgrade, the machine was running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with the Unity desktop.

Most recently I upgraded the machine to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. The install was eventually successful, but the first try was...

Chromium display anomaly under Ubuntu 14.04 Gnome

Posted 09-28-2014 at 07:05 PM by flshope

I encountered a display anomaly with Chromium 37 while running with desktop Gnome (Metacity) under Ubuntu 14.04. Whenever I start Chromium, it is displayed in all workspaces rather than in just the one where it was started. Sweeping the cursor over one of the workspaces where it should not be showing causes little blocks of the desktop to show through wherever an icon is located. Clicking the mouse opens an application if an icon lies beneath the cursor, leaving part of the screen showing Chromium...

Ubuntu 14.04 upgrade succeeds on 3-yr-old computer

Posted 09-14-2014 at 01:55 PM by flshope

After my traumatic upgrade experience on my old computer, I was not looking forward to risking a disaster with my primary machine. However, after much backing up of data and hand-wringing, I went ahead with the Ubuntu 14.04 upgrade today. It went OK and took about 3 hours including package download. The machine appears to be operating normally, graphics and all. I don't detect any speed degradation with the display or applications software. Sometimes you win one!

The machine just...

Ubuntu 14.04 upgrade fails on 11-yr-old computer

Posted 09-06-2014 at 11:09 AM by flshope

I have an 11-year old computer running Ubuntu 12.04. The Software Manager has had the 14.04 upgrade available for about a month now, and I decided to give it a try. Since OS upgrades have traditionally been disasters for me, I decided to try the 14.04 upgrade on the old machine before risking my primary machine. If you happen to read my LQ blog, there are entries referring to Pogo2003, as I call my old machine.

The upgrade installer program warned me that some of my hardware wasn't...
