Chromium display anomaly under Ubuntu 14.04 Gnome

Posted 09-28-2014 at 07:05 PM by flshope

I encountered a display anomaly with Chromium 37 while running with desktop Gnome (Metacity) under Ubuntu 14.04. Whenever I start Chromium, it is displayed in all workspaces rather than in just the one where it was started. Sweeping the cursor over one of the workspaces where it should not be showing causes little blocks of the desktop to show through wherever an icon is located. Clicking the mouse opens an application if an icon lies beneath the cursor, leaving part of the screen showing Chromium in the background. Hitting escape causes Chromium to disappear from all workspaces except the one where it was originally opened. Clicking on the workspace of origin causes all other workspaces to refill with Chromium. The ghost Chromiums are not functional.

I did not see any such problem with Unity, where Chromium displayed normally. I have not seen this anomaly with any other application.

I did find a workaround that seems to always work: after starting Chromium, click on the Maximize/Restore icon in the upper left to set the window to less than maximum. After doing that, Chromium no longer appears in the other workspaces.
