How to mount VirtualBox drive image (vdi) in Ubuntu 12.10/12.04

If you want to mount VirtualBox drive image (vdi) in Ubuntu 12.04/12.10 use vdfuse.This Fuse module uses the VirtualBox access library to open a VirtualBox supported VD image file and mount it as a Fuse file system. The mount point contains a flat directory containing the files EntireDisk, Partition1 .. PartitionN. These can then be loop mounted to access the underlying file systems.

Third time is a charm –

Honestly it has been a fun and frustrating process. I have learned a lot about openldap as well as compiling programs. There are moments where I genuinely believed that it was not possible, but alas we have made it. Let me first mention that depending on the state of your Solaris server these instructions might change dramatically. Note this process was completed successfully on a fresh install of Solaris 10.

Odds and ends.

Looking at my old web server hardware docs to see what upgrades it might take. Lo and behold, a slot 1 pIII cpu could be a replacement for the old slot 1 pII cpu. Grabbed the parts bin and whoopie there was not only a pIII, but faster than what I already had. Did the swap and now the web server is so much peppier. That was so successful, we upgraded another machine with good results.

As for the web server, we restalled it from scratch. Installing the web based apps is generally easy....

Egg curry with Meat masala - North Indian Style

Ingredients:
  • 4 full boiled shelled eggs.
  • 1/2 table spoon Cumin seeds (AKA Zeera in Hindi).
  • 1 inch Cinnamon stick (AKA Dalchini in Hindi).
  • 5 Black Peppercorns seeds (AKA Kalimirch in Hindi).
  • 4 Cloves (AKA Laung in Hindi).
  • 8 big cloves Garlic (AKA Lassun in Hindi).
  • 1 inch Ginger (AKA Adrak in Hindi)
  • 2 tablespoon Meat masala. (No, this ingredient can NOT be skipped.)
  • 1/4 tea spoon Turmeric powder (AKA Haldi in Hindi).
  • 1 medium Onion.
  • 1/2 table spoon Salt.
  • 3 small Green chillies
