Liquorix kernel seems more responsive than Debian's default

Posted 05-28-2014 at 10:46 AM by the dsc (linux-related notes)

I'm somewhat skeptical of the tuned-kernel movement, so I didn't install it expecting to make my OS "fly" or anything. It just happened that recently there had been some weird kernel error messages ("perf samples too long"), and, related to that or not, the OS would become sluggish with lots of read-or-write activity (on my old HDD that must be really slow, to add to sluggishness). Apparently you can sort of solve it in a sysctl-like way, printing a "0" to some file/parameter,...

slow 'net connection

Posted 05-28-2014 at 04:08 AM by pierre2

since, there is no *DSL availabilty, it's a 3g connection to go ..
but, boy does that thing time out, freeze and otherwise embark on a NoGo campain.

suprisingly, it will D/L stuff quite A.ok,
but it just won't stream any 'browsing the internet' ie: surf the 'net.

someting to do with the tower, - is about 8000m away - that's too far?
always thought that you could get over 20Km with mobile technology,
- but aparantly not.

Slackware-14.1-GrSecurity/PaX Kernel

Posted 05-27-2014 at 10:20 PM by arniekat
Updated 05-27-2014 at 10:52 PM by arniekat (Correct gradm script)

This tutorial will show a quick way to get GrSecurity/PaX running on Slackware64 14.1 Kernel 3.10.17. The principle is the same for Slackware 14.0, 13.37, etc. The GrSecurity Patches already contain the PaX Code. The Kernel Package Creation section will be on another tutorial as I get time. This tutorial shows the Manual Method of installing the kernel. I will be using Kernel 3.11.9 since that is the only GrSecurity Patch still available in the archives for gradm-3.0. FYI, I have also got the GrSecurity...

Slackware-14.1-Hacks-OpenVPN

Posted 05-25-2014 at 08:45 PM by arniekat

VPNBook is a free VPN Service (Virtual Private Network) which is used to securely route all your Internet Traffic through an encrypted tunnel to keep you safe from prying eyes and hackers. Any information you enter in a browser is encrypted before being sent out to VPNBook's OpenVPN Servers, which then goes out to the Internet from there.

Go to http://whatismyipaddress.com/ to see your current IP Address. You can also google "my ip"
Your IP Address Is: <Local_Address>...

You can still have google with the top black menu bar

Tags google

I truly hate websites or GUIs in general going away with nice features or changing stuff for no good reason, and/or without being in a clear opt-in/out manner.

Anyway, adding a parameter to the google query/url still brings the not-so-old UI: noj=1

You'll still need a user script to have "scholar" to be among the search options on that menu, though. Otherwise it's still on "more → even more → scholar, no longer with your original query, loser"....
