Is it ignorance or deliberate rip off?

As a retired person I have the time to help other 'older persons' learn to use their computers, and carry out simple software repairs and set-up. I was therefore deeply shocked on two occasions by clients having been well and truly 'ripped off'.
In the first instance a lady had problems opening a programme (OK, program), so took her laptop to PC World. Here she was told that her computer had failed, was out of warranty and she should replace it. They sold her a top of the range unit, better...

Install my new version of CruxEX 3.0 64 bit from 131008 to a USB Pen Drive and save your system changes - read this INSTRUCTION (http://cruxex.exton.net/cruxex-3.0-pen-drive). If you later on decide you want to install CruxEX to hard drive from the USB Pen Drive all your system changes will also be installed to the hard drive.

CruxEX 2013 is a live version of CRUX 3.0. It uses LXDE as Desktop environment and kernel 3.11.4-x86_64-exton.

3 Days and now Stand-alone LFS.

Yes, I deleted my old LFS install and use SalixOS Live 13.37 disk to install my system from the ground up alongside Windows.

It took some extra work, but it's completed, partially. I still have a few extra packages to add using a chroot entry from SalixLive before I can natively access it correctly, but so far all is well.

I had to completely import Debian's os-prober with a modified installation using the Slackware SlackBuild script as a guide, but it worked and both...

mimeopen: a nice tool to setup default applications

File association and default applications can be quite complicated, and hard to remember, specially if you have a hybrid environment, using stuff from Gnome, KDE, and whatever, while not being in none of the big ones, but on openbox or something.

One common source of problems are associations within web browsers, like firefox or chrome. They'll often have their own or use some secondary/wrong file association. I was having this problem with Google Chrome, "show in folder"...
