The decline of Linux boards.

Posted 12-14-2013 at 11:27 PM by Randicus Draco Albus

It is painfully easy to see. Look at almost any Linux users' forum and the obvious jumps out. Almost no knowledgeable members. This is true of all pan-Linux boards: LinuxQuestions, LinuxForums, LinuxFormat, Linux.org, etc. It is also true of many distro-specific boards.

The Cause
In their drive to attract Windows users, the people who manage most boards have enacted policies of enforced "politeness". "Read the manual and ask questions about the parts you do not...

"AccelMethod sna" seems to fix some issues with intel 82G33/G31

Posted 12-13-2013 at 07:26 PM by the dsc (linux-related notes)

On Debian testing/wheezy, I was having some video issues (video players, VLC and mplayer, would cease to work every now and then, and I'd need to restart X to get them to work again) with the new intel driver (2.20-something, I guess; the last one to work with no issues was 2.19, if I recall).

"Xorg -configure" wasn't generating any usable xorg.conf (exiting with error as it came up with a number of displays that "didn't match" something -- I have only one display),...

A new version of PuppEX (Puppy Linux) is ready!

Posted 12-12-2013 at 02:28 PM by exton (Exton's Blog)

PuppEX 14.1 5.6 32bit is a remaster of Puppy Linux Slacko 5.6, released on August 12, 2013. Kernel 3.10.5 is used. PuppEX uses the LXDE Desktop interface. Unlike the original Puppy Slacko 5.6, which uses JVM, Fvwm95 and IceWM as Desktop interface. PCManFM and LXTerminal are more useful ROX-Filer respectively RXV, I think. The ISO file is on the whole 317 MB, which is due to me including LXDE and compiling tools (devx_slacko_5.6.0.sfs). Slacko 5.6 original is of only 165 MB. PuppEX is despite this...

Next generation of VFFs

Posted 12-11-2013 at 05:23 PM by Tinkster

And more time passed, more water under the bridge, and more use of fivefinger shoes over the year.

Added seeya lace-ups and lontra to my collection of vibrams. The lontra adds a new level of goodness
to outdoor activities in VFFs. It's water resistent; means if you step in a puddle, or a stream that
is under ankle deep you don't get wet feet. Their only downside from my perspective is that they have
a fairly tight fit on the big toes, and they gave me blisters...

Converting from one numeral system to another can be done using the bc command.

Here are a few examples in the form of functions:

# -------------------------------------------------------------------------- #
# - Decimal to ....
# -------------------------------------------------------------------------- #
  • Binary
PHP Code:
# Convert decimal to binary
function decToBin() {
  echo
"obase=2;$1" bc

Code:
$ decToBin 19
10011
...
