All your base are belong to them!

There was an incident at work last night which raised a couple of points that, for me, make it rather baffling that proprietary software is so widely used! The incident was apparently caused by the expiration of a software licence. This leads immediately to my first point of bafflement.

Why are people and organisations willing to put up with the licensing model that basically means you don't own your apps, but merely rent them. Most of the time, this means that if for whatever...

Today I turn 1!

Posted 09-13-2010 at 10:44 PM by damgar

I just realized by looking at my details that I have been a regular member of LQ for a year this month. That also happens to coincide with my adoption of linux (Mandriva then, Slackware today). LQ just kept on coming up in google searches and answered so many questions I had to register to cut down on the ads. Happy myLQ Day to you all and thanks Jeremy!

Basically the scenario is this: I don't do a whole lot of programming anymore (in fact, the last time I wrote a C program, useful or not, was probably a good few months ago), I'm somewhat of a gamer (Neverball, LTris, various old games in DOSBox), and I like all the pretty bling on my GPU-composited desktop (i.e. I like my Compiz ).

...so why am I using Linux? Am I kidding myself?...

Rolling-Release Distro Face-Off: Linux Mint Debian Edition vs. Gentoo

Posted 09-12-2010 at 12:08 AM by Kenny_Strawn (Kenny the one-teen comittee to stamp out Proprietary $uckware)

Here are the pros and cons of several rolling-release distros that I have found:

Pros of Gentoo:
  • Is rolling-release and also source-based
  • Gentoo's ebuilds pull the most bleeding-edge software and dependencies from the apps' websites' Git repositories
  • Package manager actually supports binary packages (in the confines of proprietary drivers/browser plugins)

Cons of Gentoo:
  • Live CD only boots to a console
  • The command that
