Yeah they've worked out most of the kinks and it works very well on all machines I've tried (approx. 5-6 pc's). I like how it detects your hardware so smoothly and my pc is pretty much ready to go but plenty of options to tweak during/after installation. I find that most OS that are built off of Debian are quite stable as well.

Yeah it's very stable, I'm not sure what all the hype is about with Arch--Debian is clearly the better OS.

Debian is more stable and automated.

Arch is DIY and has lots of stuff to play with.

@ mattvdh

According to your post concerning Arch http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-linux-809900/

You are using Arch in a Virtual Machine. In a VM, some hardwares are not accessible, like the graphics card for example. In the VM, the nvidia module is not loading because it does not see your nvidia card.

As for debian, you're not going to get that much disagreement, debian is a great distro.

That's right, even is your PC has an NVidia card, an OS in a VM can't see it!

You can give the guest 3D acceleration and VRAM in VBox if capable, though, if you'd like to experiment with compiz-fusion mattvdh...

Have you installed the Guest Additions in your VM? You need to do so if you want 3D support in a guest. You do not want to install any third-party drivers when using a virtual machine.

And a note - apparently you have to install the 3d driver in the guest OS from Safe Mode.

Are you sure that the virtual OS will see it as an NVidia card, or some virtual non-NVidia card?

Sorry if this is a obvious question, I just never tried it.

mattvdh is using VMware. VMware tools is what Guest Additions is for virtualbox.

A short excerpt of VMware tools

The VMware Tools package provides support required for shared folders and for drag and drop operations.

Other tools in the package support synchronization of time in the guest operating system with time on the host, automatic grabbing and releasing of the mouse cursor, copying and pasting between guest and host, and improved mouse performance in some guest operating systems.

Apple has just topped M$ as the world's largest tech corporation. Their stock price is now greater than M$'s, and now comes in second only to Exxon's. I think the Linux vs. Windows war is over. It should now be Linux vs. OS X!
