Using a Live Linux DVD (USB drive) to retrieve personal data

One way to retrieve personal data from a problematic hard drive or computer is to boot from a Live Linux DVD or USB drive.
I used Linux Mint 19.2 MATE 64-bit on a SanDisk USB drive.

Create bootable media:

Boot Linux Mint:

Immediately after booting the computer it is necessary to repeatedly...

Burning encrypted data-DVDs or -CDs

Already using a LUKS-encrypted hard-disk partition for data storage, I thought it would be a good idea to backup some files to an optical drive, instead.

A procedure to create a LUKS-encrypted DVD is outlined, further below in this blog entry.

As the software evolves, some of the advice that I found on the Internet is too old, but the fact is not easily detectable. Some of the mentioned tools are no longer available and some procedures are considered outdated.

RHEL local DVD Repo

This article describes how to make a local repository from a RHEL installation DVD.

First and foremost:
Warning: RHEL is not a free product.

To get access to the fully up-to-date repositories (RHN) a paid subscription is needed.

Without this subscription it will not be possible to get security updates and the newest versions of packages.

An alternative for using RHEL would be CentOS or Scientific Linux. Both are free and almost identical

mplayer vs vlc

I've been a VLC media player user for a long time. But some funny thing happened when I upgraded my gentoo and VLC started lagging extremely hard. I tried everything: from downgrading codec libraries to removing ~/.vlc : nothing helped. The problem was when I was trying to watch DVDs and some avi files, it shown "buffering" on every frame, and, of course, I had a hang of few seconds every time. I've decided to try mplayer, as many people told me it's teh best.
So I emerged mplayer...
