How to provide information about peripherals with dmesg

You want to see how your Linux system reacts to a certain peripheral being plugged in (smartphone, monitor, USB stick etc.).
dmesg can provide that information, but one needs to separate it from previous messages.
Here's how:
  • Make sure the device in question is unplugged.
  • Open a terminal, maximise it.
  • Enter dmesg -w or --follow (wait for new messages).
  • Some systems require elevated privileges for dmesg, if so prepend sudo or become superuser first.
  • After dmesg -w

NEWS ABOUT LFA Build 211018
1. All packages the ordinary Linux user can wish for are pre-installed. Study the full packages list.
2. Kernel 5.10.70-exton-amd64-rt53 (with Debian patches) is used. You can of course switch to Ubuntu’s original kernel if you prefer that one....

Unbuffered shell-input

Updated 10-18-2021 at 03:41 PM by Michael Uplawski (Wrong title, much misunderstanding and ill-chosen search criteria.)

There are solutions on the Web.

Having read some of these, I prefer a Ruby-Oneliner readNB which returns the 1 character that the user has had a chance to enter on the keyboard, before readNB returns.

---------------------- In the meantime -------------------------
GazL has in the very first comment on this blog, below presented a better solution with the shell built-in command read: read accepts some parameters and a call like
read -r -s -N1 [VARIABLE]
