Installing Slackware 12.2 On An Old Dell Laptop

Posted 08-17-2009 at 01:31 PM by stuartd

I have an old laptop computer that I have had an old distribution of Fedora running on for ages. I wanted to use the laptop with QCad to create drawings of a brake van that I am helping to renovate at my local steam railway.

I could have installed QCad on the Fedora setup but it was very slow and clunky and I thought that with a more stripped down installation it might be quicker. So I decided to install Slackware 12 that I got on the DVD that came with a copy of Linux Format Magazine...

WoW Vs. Guild Wars in Slackware 12.2

Posted 07-27-2009 at 03:38 PM by linuxpokernut

I had been waiting for a hardware upgrade, and finally got one. Upgraded from a single core Sempron 3600+ to a dual core 4000 something. And a 400gb hard drive for some media and games. I had been running Kubuntu 9.04 64 bit, and it was really nice, KDE 4.0 is awesome.

So I downloaded slackware 12.2 and installed it. Did a full install with no remorse for hdd space. Got to the desktop and the first thing I did was grab wine 1.21. They are up to 1.26 already but .22 and .23 were giving...

xorg 1.6.1 surprises

After upgrading to xorg 1.6.1, I noticed that my hungarian layout of keyboard switched off at the KDM login.
I checked the xorg.conf, but the
Code:
    Option         "XkbModel" "pc105"
    Option         "XkbLayout" "hu"
was still there.
I checked the /var/log/Xorg.0.log also and noticed some warnings and errors, mainly the "AllowEmptyInput" warning that it is enabled and will ignore my keyboard definition. Wow!...

I created a script to discover the library dependencies on my system:
Code:
#!/bin/bash

ECHO=/usr/bin/echo
SED=/usr/bin/sed
FILE=/usr/bin/file
CUT=/usr/bin/cut
LDD=/usr/bin/ldd
GREP=/usr/bin/grep
AWK=/usr/bin/awk

for p in `$ECHO $PATH | $SED 's/:/ /g'`
do
    for f in $p/*
    do
        if [ 'ELF' == `$FILE -b $f | $CUT -d' ' -f1` ]; then
            if $LDD $f | $GREP -q 'not found'; then

Howto: making slackware packages from source without slackbuilds

[SIZE="5"][b]Making slackware packages from source[/b][/SIZE]

I'm posting this because some people have problems with making packages from source code, and howto where I learned how to do it isn't available anymore.

[color=red][b]WARNING![/b][/color]:
1) howto is pretty short and doesn't dive into details too much (although I initially thought about overview of commonly used build systems).
2) This doesn't work for all packages, only for most...
