Improving Slackware boot time

Slackware by default takes a long time to boot. We can minimize this. I am going to write down exactly what I did, you read that and do it on your own.

First login as root using "su" and continue:

 # nano /etc/lilo.conf
Write compact in the global section or uncomment it. [it's there somewhere at the top]

Next find the append line and add "quiet" at the end. My append line reads:

Slackware: installing from HDD using CD .iso files

Hello

Here's a procedure to install Slackware 13.0 starting with the CD .iso files on a Linux system using GRUB. It is a modified form of the procedure for installing from a DVD .iso file given here.

It was developed and tested on an ubuntu 8.04 system following a pilot Slackware installation in a VirtualBox virtual machine but nothing in the procedure is specific to that environment.

A file system is populated with the files a) required for GRUB...

Installing Slackware 12.2 On An Old Dell Laptop - Part V

It's been some time since I did any work on that old laptop. I've been away on holiday and then very busy.
So this evening I tried to get my head back into configuring eth0.
I've come up with a couple of ideas and tried them to no avail. Here goes -

I read here about pcmcia configuration:

Installing Slackware 12.2 On An Old Dell Laptop - Part IV

I meant this evening to continue exploring the installation of Slackware onto my old Dell laptop. The battery stopped working many years ago and I've been running it off the mains. This evening I plugged in the power-supply and switched on at the socket and nothing happened.

I've put a meter across the mains outlet and it's working and the plug's fuse is okay and power gets as far as the connection into the power supply, but there's no little green light coming on.
