Each distro is a custom version of linux. In fact a distro is a linux kernel plus a lot of other linux programs. The installer may check for pre-req's ( or may not ). Each distro tests to a greater, or lesser degree compatibility. If you look into the code, you will find various releases of every component that exists. Have you set squid up to allow FTP? And if you can't get out via ICMP, VNC, or other protocols, what firewall(s) do you have in place? If you block the protocols/ports, it won't work...

I have been working on an open-source project for several months now, a Linux console application written in C. I'm planning to use my blog here to announce minor-revision updates (0.x.0).
