Can anyone help me build a webcam device driver?

Posted 02-03-2009 at 08:45 AM by mcvasant

I've installed Fedora 6 (kernel 2.6.18-1.2798.fc6) on my Acer Aspire 5570 laptop.
It's got an Acer Orbicam webcam on it.I am trying to build a device driver for it as it does not work on its own in Linux.

I've first tried to build a simple "hello world" module as a driver.
Here are the things I did:

1. Installed kernel-devel-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6.i586 as

yum install kernel-devel-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6.i586

2. Then...

This must be a KPowersave laptop setting. I fixed it once with PowerDevil...and once i accidentally booted on DC power and the screen stayed bright. When i can face it, i'll have to fix this on DC power.

Meanwhile i've lost my mind, because using cognition for highest Consciousness...and...

External microphone: very low volume

Posted 02-02-2009 at 11:45 PM by xri

At some point, while using my softphone, my voice was hardly perceptible on the other side. People would hang on me because they could hear only whispers. I could not leave messages because the answering service could not record anything. Very frustrating considering that it was working great before.
Maybe I messed with some configs as I usually do.
I tested the input through my microphone with KRec; it was all as if I my microphone was dying.
I played with the settings on Kmix...

Thoughts on problem solving for new Linux users

One of the hardest issues to grasp for many Linux newbies is not a Linux issue, rather it's their problem-solving approach. With the closed-source Windows business model, you really only have one problem-solving option available: tech support. While members at sites such as LQ do their very best to provide something like tech support, there really is a lot more that newbies can do to speed up both their understanding of Linux and finding a solution to whatever problem they're looking at right...
