How can I install my modem(2WIRE HOMEPORTAL) to work on linux?
4 days ago I installed mandrake...
Now, after some time I jused mandrake withour internet I want to install my modem but I dont know how! I cant find any driver for my modem to work on linux...
I have modem called 2WIRE HOMEPORTAL
please try to help me
THANKS
I assume you are trying to use it via USB. All I can say is don't - you will put yourself in for a whole world of troubles. Your best bet is to install (or use if already installed) your ethernet card. Connect a cable between your network card and your modem - it's easy to set up and performs slightly better.
Man, my modem is connectin directly to my eyahernet card... my borthers's computers are connecting throw usb cable but in my comp it connect directly to the ethenet card, not to the usb... so how do I install it now?
Ok guys I found something but I need your help, I fount this site http://www.2wire.net/help/troublesho...ux_FreeBSD.htm
it says that if the homeportal doesnt support linux only if the computer your'r using is connect to usb.
In my case, my comp's connecting directly to the ethernet card so I think I can install it...
these are the steps I need to do, to install my modem
1. Verify that the DHCP server and the DNS (Domain Name Server) are stopped.
2. Configure your system to run as a DHCP client.
3. Connect the computer to the HomePortal network by way of HomePNA, wireless, or Ethernet.
But I dont know how to do any of the steps...please help
THANKS
It's been a while since I've used Mandrake ...... but here goes:
I think Mandrake has a Drake wizard for networking (NetDrake or somesuch) in RH it would be located under System Tools or Settings, Mandrake should be somthing similar. In there will be a number of settings, one of which will be an option to put a check against "My system uses DHCP" (not the exact wording, I guess, but it gives you an idea. As far as the DHCP and DNS servers are concerned, I don't know how they would be stopped - probably one of the settings in NetDrake (or whatever it's called).
To be honest, the last few builds I've done have been with my ethernet card already connected and running with a Net connection and RH picked it up and used it automatically.
I have just installed Red Hat 7.0 in my IBM ThinkPad 390E, Xircom realport 10/100 Ethernet (which was recognized in the instalation). I had the same problem trying to get conected to Internet through out 2wire homeportal (SBC Yahoo provider). Follow the next steps:
- verify the proper network adapter instalation
- (in RH7.0) If using KDE: From main menu/RedHat/Systems/Network Configuration
Choose INTERFACES Tab, select your NIC and EDIT, Choose DHCP in Proto section.
- ShootDown and reboot your system.
hey lads the 2wire is a router/modem combo - All you need to do is get your nic driver installed [linux driver provided on cd for dlink 530tx but pcm/cia 690tx driver is not so go to their website] and obtain ip automatically from the 2wire.
Once you pull an ip ~ browse to the gateway ip address and login. Use the system password to login I believe. You need to config the router to connect PPPoE with your email address and passwd. I presume if your friends are already surfing then they have the router configged already. If so then you should be surfing if not and you can ping yahoo's ip 216.109.118.64 but not www.yahoo.com - then force dns in your network settings.
Any problems with that and you can call
2wire tech support here: 1 877-523-7609
I recommend using ethernet connection over USB. Ethernet is faster and more stable.
sorry if I did not get you in time - is so ~ hopefully this will help someone else in the same situation.
I'm having a similar problem. Trying to connect to the 2wire gateway with a HomePNA 2.0 card a netgear PA301. I've got the drivers installed and followed some documentation i've found with google but it still doesnt seem to work. I'm running slackware 9.1 with the 2.4.22 kernel.
You know 2Wire and SBC both don't support Linux. They suck....
Anyway, I've got the HomePNA USB adapter and I'm pretty much just need a driver. Linux recognizes it as a "2Wire PC Port" but it just needs a stinking driver!!! Argh. If anyone could help, it'd be great.
you will find that most isp's don't support linux, [in fact hardly anyone does unfortunately] but I do [not officially] and I work for SBC 2nd Tier. welll when I say I support it I mean I will try and give some support and ideas, possibly reseach an issue but on the whole, I never get too many linux calls unless the cust knows what they are doing. and then it's usually simple config issue on the networking of the router or ip's or something.
Did the nic come with the 2wire? If so, did you check the CD for a linux driver? If not then your your own. check Manufacturers sites and other groups. Wireless can be a pain in the rear on linux to get working. You should not have too much problem using wired connection to 2wire as long as you nic is installed and ifup'ed.
I'm a genuine linux newbie, but pretty good with computers in general. I've looked all over the place. Also with being a linux newbie, I don't know what a nic is, because I've probably enver referred to whatever it is like that before.
and plus, my adapter didn't come with a cd...just the sbc yahoo one...and that definitely didnt have anything there
