Mandrake 10.0 on Compaq Presario 3000?

I have been buying boxed Mandrake Linux distributions for years. I finally got 9.2 working on my desktop, and I really like it.

Infortunately, when I tried to install it on my Presario 3000, things didn't work so well. No graphic interface at all. I at last got the vesa driver to work, but the quality was awful.

I have been told there are things I can do, and I probably could if I wanted to. But I'm not a hobbyist, and I have many, many better ways to spend my time. I just don't want to get into another long, nightmarish mess (as I have from time to time over the years). -- Besides, I suspect that even if I did get the screen to work right, there would probably be other (sound, modem, etc.) problems.

My question is this: If I get version 10.0, is there much chance that it would work any better on my laptop than 9.2 did?

Thanks,

JAO

I do not know how Mandrake 10.0 works. But, I tried with Ubuntu.
Use http://cmb.phys.cwru.edu/kisner/linux/compaq-r3000/ as some of installations needed to make them work in either distros are same. Example: ndiswrapper for Broadcom 802.11 b/g.

I have an r3000 also & I'm running Slack 10.1 on it. Could you post the results of lspci so we can tell what hardware you have? That will make it easier for us to help you.

Hey, does your volume control buttons on the right side of the laptop work with Linux?

They work fine in KDE.

Preferences->Regional & Accessibilty->Keyboard Layout

Then choose "Compaq Internet Keyboard (18 Keys)"

There way be a way to make them work in Gnome, but I don't know.
