Installing Mandrake 10 on a Compaq Presario

Hello, I have a Compaq Presario SR1100 series. I tried installing Mandrake10 (and SuSE 9.1 with the exact same results). After pressing enter to install, the progress bar goes about 80% then the system restarts starting the same circle again. I tried creating a new partition on C with the same results. I tried installing a second HDD with same results. I am running XP home on my C drive. I have used the Mandrake (and SuSE) disks to install on other systems with no problems. If there is any other info someone needs please ask. I do not want to use Windows on my new PC, but would like to keep it just in case. My next step would be to wipe all partitions and start from scratch but I know XP should be intalled first and I do not want to waste all thet time if it will end the same.

Thanks for reading.

I know it's only been an hour but I am gonna just try scraping teh XP partition and just installing Mandrake. I've been holding on to it like a security blanket for a year now... it's time to let go.

I would still like to know if anyone else is having this problem or if anyone has ideas as to the source.

Unhappy Installing Linux on a Compaq Presario

I'm having the exact same problem on my Compaq Presario, S1120NX, 512 Mb.

The installation program's progress bar gets to about 85% and reboots the system. It shouldn't be a symptom of low RAM because I've installed this exact same Linux on an IBM NetVista with only 128 Mb.

Someone on www.linuxforums.org

recommended installing in Safe Mode (not sure if a similar option is available in my Mandrake Linux 10). I haven't tried it yet but will after this post.
