Gentoo is good, but its no debian

I installed Gentoo from stage 3 on my box yesterday, and since i have emerged kde, firefox mplayer.

i have found the entire install to be pretty easy, and now the system is up its running great.

Though when i do a df -h in console, it reports that im using 1.8 gb of space, which is atleast 3 times my old debian install.

so i looked around and found out where to clean the portage cache etc, and cleaned out my temp files. but now the install is still 1.4 gb.

Im sure there is heaps of stuff installed now that i no longer need after compiling, but how do i find this out? and how can i automate it?

Im considering moving back to debian and tweaking it to run as fast, however ill stay gentoo if someone can tell me how to cut down my gentoo install.

any help is much appreciated

Look in /usr/portage/distfiles . That is where all the source tarballs are stored. There is also a directory call "All" in /usr/portage that may have some binaries in it, not 100% that is the exact location. If you do not need them you can delete them, especially if you have broadband.

Mine is about 19GB. I am on dial-up and I save everything.

a great and easy way to check where are the large files are stored is to use a program called Filelight
"Filelight allows you to understand exactly where your diskspace is being used by graphically representating your filesystem as a set of concentric segmented-rings."

Are you saying that you had a KDE system that only took up 600MB of disk space. I didn't even know this is possible !!!!

As for trimming down if space is such a concern I would opt for a lighter desktop (e.g. xfce4).
You could also try emerge -p depclean.. Although though as you have only just installed there shouldn't be any orphaned libraries.

I must admit I think deborphan is more reliable in finding orphaned libraries/packages.

You could also take a good look at your 'use' flag and and re-complile some packages with less features (i.e. the ones you dont need.) - this is one of Gentoo's strengths'.

Also look at your cflags optimizations e.g -O2 will create smaller (although slightly slower) binaries than -O3.

Mind you I wouldn't fancy recompiling KDE - takes freakin ages

yeah i didnt compile kde i got it from the packages cd,

as for the 600mb install, its true. and after a while and some packages later, i had

mplayer
xmms
gimp
firefox
thunderbird
kde
gaim
and rdesktop

all < 850mb!

Though deb sarge wasnt quite as fast, im sure if i disable some services it will be about the same.

space isnt really that much of an issue, im just like that.

thanks anyways guys, ill be installing sarge again 2morro. i might pay gentoo a third visit in the future. its just so 1337

Thanks

CaDj

My KDE directory take just over 430MBs. You have a old one or just installed the minimum or what?

That is pretty small.

In Slackware 10.0 the full installation of kde-3.2.3 takes > 450MB in total. But I think the size of the installation depends greatly on the optional stuff you install, I guess a minimal install would probably be less than 150MB.
On my system it's about 383MB, but I skipped the kitchensink-3.2.3-i486-1 package

Wow, and the hidden truths come through! I'm a Desktop Debian user that has been considering trying Gentoo for a long time. I think this thread has helped point me in the right direction.

do a stage 1 install

also, to add to the cflags thing mentioned

using -Os will produce smaller binaries, at the cost of them running slower, i say, if you have the space, use -O3 and whatever other cflags options you want (i have a few others, some make the code bigger, others just add options, some for security ... go thru "info gcc" and read up on invocation of it, so you can add other optimizations if you want) ....

Well that is not the first time I have heard that. I started out with a stage 3 install from CD, then did the updates, then a emerge -e world. I read that is the same thing as stage 1, not real sure.

I have been told by some local phone guys that DSL is coming. I hope it is soon. I got 28.8K for tonight though. I usually only get 26.6K. Every bit helps.

Later
