package compat-libcwait-2.1-1 is already installed
[root@localhost parches]# rpm -q compat-libcwait-2.1-1.i386.rpm
package compat-libcwait-2.1-1.i386.rpm is not installed

issue "rpm -qa | grep compat-libcwait". this will tell you if the rpm has been installed or not.

When you query for a package you don't give the platform or the version as a part of the name query.

That is:
# rpm -q compat-libcwait
is the correct usage as valen_tino said.

The problem is that these lines told me that it was installed and then that it was not! Very useful command btw, thanks!

On 64-bit platforms you need to see whether the 32-bit and/or 64-bit versions are present and rpm doesn't tell you unless you specifically ask. This may be similar. Try adding this to your rpm query:
Code:
--queryformat "%{NAME}-%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE} (%{ARCH})\n"
