I probably listen to more Jimi Hendrix than anything else and have 23 of his albums.
The Burning of the Midnight Lamp being one of my favorite songs, the bands first performance of it live on stage was on the Stockholm Live album. There is a copy of it on youtube but it's of very low quality. Here's the studio version off Electric Ladyland:
Ah, you're my kinda guy. I've got him playing with Little Richard, Curtis Knight, Lonnie Youngblood, Johnny Winter, and Traffic. That Steven Stills album is where they're playing in his basement, isn't it?
I saw Johnny Winter when he was doing his Rock And Roll album tour in '73 at Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis. It's right next to Highway 61 and when he did that song he brought the house down.
Saw Robin Trower warm up for Foghat there, too. Trower blew them away.
Thanks for the Traffic jam link. I had not heard that before and i have always searched for Jimi rarities - love the original cassette skeleton demo for "1983" ! Johnny is a bit uneven for me, some things I love and some are meh but I love everything I've ever heard of Jimi and Robin. I'd like for -- Villanova Junction --- and the original Electric Ladyland studio full version of 1983 - A Merman I Shall Turn To Be to be played at my funeral. In the meantime I will play those and Fillmore East Machine Gun for myself at least as often as weekly XD. My sincere apologies for not posting links to all of the above. It's because of two things
1) I'm having problems with Vimeo and Dailymotion audio again and I won't link something I haven't checked out
2) Almost 50 years after Jimi's death that greedy, undeserving, so-called Born Again, Triflin' Hooker, Half Sister Janie, whom I guess has either never heard of nor cares about time limits and passing into Public Domain, continues to police YouTube for any uploads of "commercial" content, IMHO basically risking the killing of the goose that laid the golden egg. Even such egotistical holdouts like Paul Simon and Bob Dylan have finally realized that if you don't have a readily available net presence, you are in grave danger of being buried in the past and forgotten by more and more people as time goes on. You want a legacy? Publish in modern terms.
Actually, come to think of it, back in the day when I bought LPs I was free to play them for friends or even make a copy on cassette and that apparently didn't kill sales. In fact, if the Grateful Dead (who I never much cared for musically) didn't kill their sales by encouraging bootlegs but instead became HUGE from such touring policies, why hasn't The Biz realized Music and Art aren't like Coca Cola and other "normal" commodities? Oh right.... the ultra conservative "Business Mind". Oh well. At least on the upside, more and more rare video and audio from Live shows of Jimi's shows up on YouTube these days. Take THAT Janie, you pathetic parasite!
Thanks for that and I hope Janie now needs an eyepatch from the poke. Pirate would be an appropriate look for her. I like that version too, naturally, but the original off of the Band of Gypsys album has always just knocked me out. As a touring guitar player for over a decade, once I saw the video of that Fillmore East performance I immediately fell in love and admiration all over again to be able to see Jimi so locked in, in the moment, that the guitar becomes superfluous and it is as if his "soul" is plugged directly into the Marshall stacks. Even though it is obvious he is completely aware and in control, like when he steps back to apparently turn one off and another on, the flow is never broken. It is pure surrender to disappear into the act. I have yet to see and hear such a magnificent musical performance (and I have seen a few score) and I doubt anyone will ever mesmerize and move me so.
