Thanks, otchie1, for your help,

but I dont particularly want to reinstall linux, (although I will as a last resort).

I have tried VESA, at 1024X768 (which didnt work) and have never edited the config file directly, but I used dpkg-reconfigure xserver xfree86 to change the settings.
I havent used the advanced option, and I will do that now.

I will download Linux-ix86-glibc23 and install it.
