XFree86 Display Issue

I am an absolute idiot when it comes to linux, and I hardly know any commands and stuff - but I know a few programming languages so its not to say I couldnt learn them too - but back to the point...

Recently I tried to Install debian with KDE for myself and my parents who have been subjected to and are paranoid about spyware.

Everything appeared to work fine...

However, when trying to load X I encountered some display issues:

(BTW I hope it is ok to put the whole log online, it does say to down the bottom anyway... :o)

I know that my card is an aeging GeForce 4 FX4600, but it must still me too new to be on the list of drivers, so is there a generic driver I could use?

(Knoppix works, I'm using it now)

Other then that I am seriously totally stuck....

Thanks in advance!

utanja 07-13-2004 06:35 AM

actually.....the file to post is...

/etc/X11/XF86Config-4

looks like you dont have a driver listed in this file...

R00ts 07-13-2004 08:13 AM

Well it looks like you have 'nv' selected as your driver inside your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. I got the exact same error as you did when I first installed sarge on my computer. I fixed it by changing the driver in my /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file and then everything worked fine. Look at this site: http://www.tjansen.de/xfree-features/. It seems like the nv driver should support your video card though. (note this isn't a complete list, for it doesn't even have the driver I use on there). You could try installing the official linux drivers from nvidia's website and seeing if that works. Good luck!

macondo 07-13-2004 09:22 AM

make sure you install as root :

#apt-get install x-window-system discover mdetect read-edid

#dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

after solving your problem, i would recommend to read the whole article, it will
save you headaches later on. Most times, the long road is the shortest one; in the sense that you don't have to come back to patch anything because it was done right the first time.

zizdodrian 07-13-2004 06:15 PM

Thankyou all for your swift replies.

I tried installing the NVIDIA display driver, but it said something about having no shell for my kernel... or something like that.

It then tried to comile a kernel but failed, repeating a version of the previous message...

I think the kernel for debian 3.0 r2 is 2.8 - correct me if I'm wrong...

Is it something to do with my kernel being too new/old?

Maybe I'll look for another 'generic' type driver. Is there one in the listof default debian drivers?

Thanks....

BTW I had a look at the Very Verbose Debian 3.0 Installation Walkthrough, but when I installed it didnt ask me about things like horizontal and vertical scan frequencies...

R00ts 07-13-2004 08:42 PM

If I recall correctly, the official NVidia drivers require that you have your kernel's source code installed on your machine. Did you make sure you have that?

And the latest kernel is 2.6.7, so you are definitely not using a 2.8 kernel. ;) I know sarge comes with the 2.4.25 kernel, but I'm not sure about woody. I don't think it is a problem with the age of your kernel. The I think Nvidia drivers require a 2.2.something kernel or later.

I couldn't find any other generic driver listings for xfree. You may want to try googling for: "linux nvidia driver" and see what you can find. First I'd install the source to your kernel (assuming its not already there) and then try installing the official nvidia drivers again. The readme that comes with the drivers is pretty well written and you can also view it here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux.html (select your CPU architecture and the readme is on the next page). Sorry I couldn't be more help.

zizdodrian 07-14-2004 05:22 AM

Oh... well... I am totally baffled now. :)

I am sorry to say the drivers still aren't working, and I dont have the source of the kernel, let alone know how to let the NVIDIA installation recognise the source, or where to find it.

Is there a sort of 'safe' driver paired with a low 'safe' resolution which should work with most cards?

I would just like to get kde to work, because my father is getting upset and disapointed... he was quite hopeful we could, over the past year we have all grown to loathe windows with a passion.

Thanks for your help...

Oh and... I forgot to post the config file (/etc/X11/XF86Config-4), as utanja said:

R00ts 07-16-2004 12:25 AM

Hey, I don't know if you got your problem worked out or not but I managed to find a more complete listing of xfree video drivers today. http://xfree86.linuxwiki.org/VideoDrivers

zizdodrian 07-23-2004 11:04 PM

ARGH!!!

I noticed that I need the source of the debian 3.0 r2 kernel to get the latest NVIDIA driver to work... but I cant find a place to download the source... it is all 'you pay us to send you a cd'.

I dont want a cd... I just want to download the source.

When I look in /usr/src there are just a whole lot of folders which apparrently contain nothing.

This is becoming anoying, since I read in a book that a lot of applications need the source to install...

Thanks again...

Graphics Card Correction

My graphics card is actually a GeForce4 MX 440 with 128 Mb ram...

goddessamy 07-24-2004 07:03 AM

Hi zizdodrian,

I had exactly the same problem after installing Debian Woody. I have the same graphics card as you as well, a NVIDIA 440 MX with 128 mbs of RAM so hopefully this will work for you as well. (disclaimer: I am a newbie, only just installed a couple of days ago).

As the drivers from NVIDIA's website wouldn't install because the kernel needs to be version 2.4 or higher (and recompiling the kernel sounds scary), I installed the lastest version of X-Windows from www.xfree86.org. This includes support for the NVIDIA 4 cards. It comes with an installation script which worked without a hitch.

After that installs, running "XFree86 -configure" should auto-detect the video card and create a configuration file. You may have to edit this slightly if your mouse or something isn't detected, but it should get the video settings right. It'll print out a line to use to test the new settings, which should load X-Windows successfully.

zizdodrian 07-24-2004 04:25 PM

I dont know...

thanks for your quick reply,

but is it

Linux-ix86-glibc20,
Linux-ix86-glibc21,
Linux-ix86-glibc22, or
Linux-ix86-glibc23?

I dont know what glibc is.

Thankyou all again.

goddessamy 07-24-2004 05:35 PM

The installation script will check for you.

From the installation guide at http://www.xfree86.org/current/Install.html :
</i>
Our binaries are organized by sub-directories which correspond to each of the OS/platforms for which we provide binaries. First go to the sub-directory that represents your OS platform. In some cases (e.g., Linux) there may be a number of choices depending on the architecture or libc version your platform uses. In all case we recommend that you first download the Xinstall.sh script, and run it as in the following example to find out which binary distribution you should download.

sh Xinstall.sh -check

The output of this utility tells you which is the correct set of binaries for you to download. If you are careful with this step you will save yourself a lot time and trouble from NOT downloading an incompatible distribution.
</i>

I grabbed the Xinstall.sh from the Linux-ix86-glibc22 directory, but I don't think it makes too much difference which one you use to check.

otchie1 07-24-2004 05:36 PM

they are all versions of the same thing.....the bigger the number, the more recent the file. XFree86 has been, ahhem, replaced by Xorg as the the preferred provider of X server functionality. Don't worry too much about it as they are compatible. http://freedesktop.org/XOrg should get you there. Be VERY CAREFUL to read the BUILD instructions on the web site. They are slightly unusual but if you follow them you will get it working. You might want to do a very quick bit of research into a file called .initrc as well as it will save you having to learn all about naff window managers after installing xorg.

BTW, your log file showed that your video card wasn't even detected and from the thread it seems that you haven't got the source installed on your box either. In your situation I'd take the easy route and start again from scratch. Personally I'd use Slackware 10 as it's a doddle (relatively speaking). The only pain being that the rivafb module is loaded in the kernel by default (as it is most everywhere) and must be killed before using the nvidia driver BUT the builtin in vesa driver will have you up and working(YES, even with your TV out) ;-)
