Inspiron Mini 9 is in the he-ouse.

Posted 12-17-2008 at 10:31 AM by PresGas (President Gas is President Gas again.)

Okay, so I got the machine in late yesterday and this morn, I immediately put in Xubuntu 8.10 alternative cd so that I could get the encrypted private directory without much hassle. Also, I kinda wanted the surprise of seeing what I would boot up to and what would be available. I am now writing this entry from it.

Here is the lshw output (removed USB stuff:
    description: Portable Computer
    product: Inspiron 910
    vendor: Dell

The begining

Posted 12-17-2008 at 09:37 AM by KianTern

For some time now I come up with different ideas how to make Linux a better OS.
Mostly I write down these ideas on my PC at home in hope that one day I'll have time to implement them.
Unfortunately I don't, so the ideas are gathering dust.
Some of the ideas are general concepts that are not related to specific application or even OS.
Some I even doubt can be implemented at all.
I've decided that I'll post some or all of them here in hope that someone will like...

Virtual Machines and Ubuntu 8.10

Posted 12-17-2008 at 07:29 AM by proji

So over the weekend I finally got round to installing Ubuntu 8.10 into a virtual machine environment using Parallels Desktop (which I maintain is a great piece of software).

My initial impressions of Ubuntu 8.10 were not that different to my impressions of using Ubuntu 7 in so much as it looks pretty similar. I can't say I've ever been a fan of Ubuntu's default brown look. The system itself always shows great promise, but the default theme feels a little drab.

Require Password Change script v2.

Posted 12-16-2008 at 06:11 PM by camh
Updated 12-16-2008 at 06:13 PM by camh (changed title to be more accurate)

Here is the second version of my required password change script. Added automated salt and password generation functionality, and removed the use of temp files.

If anyone knows how this can be optimized or improved, please comment. I'm still learning bash scripting and any help is appreciated.
