Kubuntu: I have my main machine in the garage which acts as storage for all media i.e. DVB, movie files, sound files, image files.
I can run Kaffeine and Amarok via ssh on machine in bedroom but the audio is not passed on.
The sound works on the local machine fine so I have been using a wireless headphone for the sound. Slightly out of sync.
I have "Enable Networked Sound" switched ON in KDE sound config on both machines.
I tried NAS (Network Audio Server) because it was there.
It would be nice to not have to go to the shed and setup the wireless headset each time I forget.
Can't you just Amarok to play the file from the server? E.g. tall amarok to play fish://garage/path/to/music.mp3
or setup NFS on the garage server so you can mount the file dirs on your system to play locally.
Thanks for responding.
Yes you are right, and I have for Amarok, for playing mp3's/oggs but the podcasting is where it comes undone.
The garage/server machine keeps podcasts updated and also knows which ones I have played. As I work in the garage during the day I would like to use just the one Amarok on both machines.
As for Kaffeine, I can nfs the files but I like to use the Digital TV on machine2 as well.
Hope I make sense...
what about making a nfs share for /home/USER/.kde/share/apps/amarok on the server and mounting it on your client machine? so you can share the config and stats on both.
Sorry binary_y2k2 but that seems like a long workaround. I was hoping for a simple solution or something I have missed. I only switched to K/Ubuntu when 6.06 was released after using Suse for a couple of years and it did work with that. I'm guessing it might be ALSA so if I try ESD or OSS I may have some success.
(edit) I tried esd and 'network audio system' in kde sound config but neither worked no sound gets to machine2.
On a side note. The documentation you pointed to about FreeNX suggested changing port numbers for ssh. Wouldn't that mess up my standard ssh setup.
I have ssh keys setup which allows me to have a link on my desktop which points to and runs Amarok from the other machine with a single click:
ssh -X maxo@192.168.0.24 amarok ,too easy.
I want this to work but my wireless headphones do work and so I'm stuck with that unless someone gives me a fix. FreeNX is overkill.
The suggested port change is only to stop crack attempts from people trying to login to your server, you don't need to do it. Also you could just change the script to
"ssh -X maxo@192.168.0.24:8888 amarok"
and that would work fine.
To use sound over ssh you need some kind of sound server, I had some sucsess with ESD on a friends system a while ago. It's not that hard to setup either.
