I did a full update yesterday on my Slack 14 machine, using slackpkg. Everything went well, but when I entered the 'startx' command, the x windows system failed to launch.
The gist of the error messages is as follows:
Quote:
(==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: etc. etc.
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
(==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"
FATAL: Module nvidia not found.
Fatal server error:

The post-crash error message also suggests checking the log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log. Here is the file:

I have an older nvidia card. It's the nvidia corp nv34 [GeForce FX 5200]. I used the nvidia legacy 173 driver and kernel.
As before, the installation seemed to work as it should, but I got the same error message, when I entered startx.
I don't think I had problems with the nvidia card when I first installed 14.0.
I'm in an area of ignorance here and I thought it best I post this to LQ, rather than trying ad hoc solutions and getting nowhere or worse, f-ing up my machine even more.
Usually this follows a kernel update. You need to rebuild the nvidia modules for the running kernel.
To add to Didier's excellent advice, you may also need to reinstall the nvidia Xorg driver. At least I've found this to be the case when certain Xorg updates have come without regard to the running kernel.
I went back to the 'Proprietary Graphics Drivers' page and followed the instructions for 'Installation via the nVIDIA Binary.' This worked exactly as directed. I'm back up and running, as they say, with KDE. Many thanks for the suggestion and a special nod to those at nvidia, who keep they old liunx/unix drivers up on the web.
