Ok back to this. Today I noticed there are a few options on the bottom of the screen and I tried failsafe gnome and could get in.

Not sure what that tells me but its something to get me in.

Ok so it is definitely a xsession thing. As the other users that were generic setup work fine. The one user (main one) that was customized does not.

I still cannot get this to work and I cannot get my wireless to work.. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I need this Laptop for work.

I went into networking and ti was working over the weekend. but for some reason now i cannot get the wireless to work. the light on the LT is not lit so that tells me this may be a driver problem????

I tried the hardware driver program again and it does not find anything. It does find one driver not in use but it is installed.

Alternate Atheros "madwifi" driver

odd deactivated reboot and then reactivated it and its working

this os really sucks. I have to deactivate and reactivate my wireless drive all the time to get it to work.

I guess thats what i get for using something that is free.

Dont get me wrong I love Linux but this upgrade really hozed. I had better luck with Fedora. I am playing with CentOS now too. See if i can replace ubuntu image with that.

Hello,

In my opinion this OS as you stated doesn't suck, it's just that the upgrade is failing all over for various reasons. Best results are obtained by just performing a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 (so I've read and heard, not experienced).

The statement that you're getting what you deserve for using something free is caused by your disappointment in the upgrade I believe, since you're still on Linux. Don't blame the entire OpenSource world for the mistakes of one distro that released an upgrade too soon.

If you still can access your data, back it up, perform a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 and see what problems you encounter after that, that's what I'd do.

Kind regards,

Eric

I agree i should have been specific and said Ubuntu Linux. Not all Linux.

Sorry just very frustrated with all of this not working. I actually love Linux.

The problem I have is i have 3 partition on the disk XP Fedora and Ubuntu. It seems every time i do a clean install I mess up the other 2. I still have XP booting issues. I dont want to lose my Fedora install too. So I ma hesitant to do a clean install. May be I will just back everything up to another dive then wipe this machine out and just install Ubuntu on it. kind of a bummer but may be thats how I have to run it.

I really dont like the idea of having to carry my Fedora on an external disk etc. when I have a 360G drive that i can put it on.

Perhaps you should focus on this problem.
What happens when you do a fresh install?

Windows stops working. The boot block seems to get over written or something. I also did not want to have to customize my laptop for Ubuntu. Got it to where I liked it

Well I may have some good news.. no solution but I did find a month old back up of my system i had on a drive at work so I am going to buy another 250G drive(compusa 69$). Rebuild to 9.4. if that works then I will at least have my old system back and I can continue to work on this issue as time allows without being so panicked to get my machine back.

Talked to several people i know that know Ubuntu and they all agree Ubuntu dropped the ball with the migration process.

They recommended the clean install method. But the migration has many issues.
However it is possible to recover from this so I may just keep plugging at it once I get my 9.4 image back. I wont try a migration again for some time and when I do Ill be sure to keep a current copy on the other disk.

Maybe Ill create a new partition and run 2 version of Ubuntu before upgrading that way I can mount the old one to the new one and copy my user data over as needed. Then once verified it works I can backup and remove the old image after a few days/weeks of testing.

This is what I do fro my AIX systems at work so time to implement this at home...
