password encryption in /etc/shadow

Posted 06-19-2009 at 11:43 AM by vielmaj

Thanks for all you trying to help. I did try changing the default encryption to des. However; my old account is written in blowfish, and so is our most active account users. I am just having people reply by email if they want their account active. This is a great forum. I tried first, and had over 100 people look at my post and no one has replied once.

Ubuntu on my work desktop

Posted 06-16-2009 at 06:21 AM by bitpicker (Bitpicker's Blog: Random musings and rants)

I have been using Ubuntu as my main OS at work; I'm the only employee doing so, but as I am the sum total of our IT staff I can pretty much do what I want.

Up until yesterday I was using Ubuntu 7.10, but as it recently met the end of its life cycle and Add/Remove wouldn't find packages anymore I decided to install 9.04 in parallel at first.

Installation of the basic system too about half an hour; it imported my Firefox settings from 7.10 but not my Thunderbird profile,...

... and so we come to Heinlein again (and not for the last time, either), and a book that has come to be known as "controversial," Starship Troopers.

Given what I'd read about this novel, and my mixed feelings about some of Heinlein's work (and especially the really doctrinaire stuff), I expected to be utterly revolted by Starship Troopers. And it didn't happen.

There is actually plenty to like about this book: the narrator, Johnny Rico, is a likable enough...

LQ should be a good place to record my challenges with Linux. I'm starting out with Slackware 12.2.

I've setup software RAID and installed Firebird as the SQL database.

I've also installed Tomcat. Next step is to link Appache and tomcat but I'd really like to try Slackware64 so am wary about doing too much before that.
