Happy New Year!

Posted 12-31-2010 at 06:15 PM by beetleman64 (Sensible World of Linux)

It is Saturday the 1st of January 2011 (or 1/1/11) here in Scotland, and has been for around 15 minutes. And what a year it has been. Open source may have become invisible, but that didn't stop the march of Linux into many aspects of our lives - not least mobile phones.

But we can't stay serious for long. Have a great 2011, wherever you may be, whomever you're with, and whatever you're doing! And you never know: 2011 may just be the year of Linux...

UGH! I hate broken configure scripts/pkg-config setups (cairo-compmgr/vala)

Posted 12-30-2010 at 03:15 PM by lumak (Lumak's Guide to Random Things)

Seriously, one of the most annoying things about linux and open source is the constant changing of library names and versions and the inconsistent use of pkg-config or the lack their of!

OK so the configure script for cairo-compmgr does a check for vala which goes fine. It knows where the compiler is and what to do. But later in the script it uses pkg-config to double check the library dependencies and it can't find vala... why? well because the script checks for the library 'vala-1.0'...

HowTo: Run a more *UPDATED* Android On Your PC

Posted 12-30-2010 at 04:05 AM by Kenny_Strawn (Kenny the one-teen comittee to stamp out Proprietary $uckware)
Updated 12-30-2010 at 12:33 PM by Kenny_Strawn

There was an article in the Syndicated News forum that told how to run Android on your PC but referred to Live Android, which is DEPRECATED.

To get a more updated version of Android on your computer, you have to build it from source as there is currently no build for any PCs (aside from specific vendors) on the official site (which has moved to http://android-x86.org) that's greater than 1.6. However, thanks to the instructions on http://android-x86.org/getsourcecode, that shouldn't...
