parallel port with cups (LPT)

Posted 10-16-2012 at 05:07 AM by ted_chou12

Hi, I am tired of USB port so I went ahead and tried to use a parallel port to connect my printer:
First check if the lp mod is added:
Code:
lsmod | grep par
if not:
Code:
parport_pc 22292 1
parport 29012 2 parport_pc,lp
Then do:
Code:
modprobe lp
Make sure you add this to /etc/rc.d/rc.local, to ensure the code runs everytime during boot.
Now check again:
Code:
lsmod | grep par
"lp" should now already be displayed....

Good security practices.

Often people wonder how to really effectively protect their PCs regardless of what operating system they have on it. People think, "I can buy or download this one program and automatically I'm fully protected." They never realize how wrong they are. Just installing a toolkit doesn't give you the best protection possible. here's a few basic ways I've found to really stretch the abilities of your toolkits to not only give you proper protection, but full administration over what goes on in...

Example script to run and manage a service (tcpdump) with managed logging.

I made this script as a reply to a question on a thread before. The accidentally simplified complexity of it amazes me so I thought that it would be nice to post this on a blog as well. Original thread: https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...cpdump-800385/

The script runs and manages a service (tcpdump). It could also automatically delete files older than C days, and reduce the size of a logfile if it's already larger than N bytes....

RHEL – Installing multiple OS versions using Logical Volume Manager

Posted 10-10-2012 at 07:56 AM by iamswift

Introduction:
Logical Volume Manager is a very good tool available in Linux to play around with disks and its sizes. This tool is very powerful that it virtually eliminates the requirement for fdisk based partition after the initial setup. Nowadays only two main partitions are created. One for “boot” and another for “LVM”. LVM internally has volume groups and logical volumes which act as independent partitions.

RHEL – Create new logical volume from root volume

Posted 10-10-2012 at 04:51 AM by iamswift
Updated 10-11-2012 at 01:01 AM by iamswift

Introduction:
We know that modern systems can have multiple hard disks and each hard disk can be divided as partitions. The idea behind partition is that it gives flexibility in managing the disks. Let’s say we have multiple operating systems to be installed in the same machine, partition provides solution for this. Each partition can have its own operating system. Apart from this advantage, partitions also help in grouping the type of files that are stored.
The Linux Logical Volume...
