A good $PS1 for displaying long paths in the bash prompt

Posted 03-13-2013 at 11:29 PM by the dsc (linux-related notes)

Tags bash, prompt, ps1

Code:
PS1='${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\t \u $(if [ ${#PWD} -gt 30 ] ; then myPWD="${PWD:0:12}…/\W" ; myPWD="${myPWD:0:25}…" ; else myPWD=$PWD; fi ; echo $myPWD) $ '
It will display full paths smaller than 30 characters entirely, but for longer paths it will get only the first characters of the whole path, and the fist characters of the last folder in the full path.

The end result is something like:

Run Slackware (Exton|Defender and Exton-Slack) from a USB stick and save all system changes

Posted 03-13-2013 at 12:56 PM by exton (Exton's Blog)

I have made new versions of Exton-Slack 14.0 version 130217 and Exton|Defender version 121120. The new versions can as before be run from a USB stick. The difference now is that any changes you make to the Systems (including upgrades and new software installations) are automatically saved on the stick. You will thus be quite portable, because the Systems on the stick (of course) can run on any “normal” computer.

I’ve kept the old file names (exton-slack-64bit-kde410-906mb-130217.iso...

Run your Slackware 64bit system better with the latest kernel!

Posted 03-13-2013 at 12:52 PM by exton (Exton's Blog)

I have compiled a very useful (as I think) 64bit kernel for Slackware 12.0 – 14.0 and/or all Slackware derivatives. For example Slax, Zenwalk , SlackEX, Exton|Defender and Exton-Slack. The kernel is compiled exactly the same way as Slackware’s latest kernel 3.2.29 huge. “My” kernel 3.8.2-x86_64-exton has even more support for new hardware, etc. Kernel 3.8.2 is the latest stable kernel available from Kernel.org. Released 20130303.

Exton|Defender Super Rescue System SRS is a Linux system available as both a bootable USB stick (Slackware 14.0, 32bit – version 121120) and Live DVD (Fedora 18, 64bit – version 130307) for administrating or repairing your system and data after a crash.
