Window-Jacking

Posted 03-26-2009 at 10:25 AM by thebusker

well, I window-jacked my wife's vista box. It is now Minty Fresh.

Grabbed me a USB, these instructions and altered the boot order on her machine. I give it about two weeks before she's a convert.

My main machine is a Frankenstein beasty. The box was some old Pentium III which was gutted and overhauled. Old 1999 monitor, industrial strength sound card, wireless only, 64 bit chipset... it's a study in contrast.

Initial load was with Windows 7. Tried that...

Run httpd_unified permissively.

How to enable /var/www/html to be read and written to..

2 Once there, select Boolean.

3 Then filter by httpd_unified.

4 Set httpd_unified as active.

This will set the httpd_unified to run permissively, but does not disable SELinux.
After that you can chmod any file you like and it will take effect.

Day < 5...

Posted 03-25-2009 at 11:14 PM by thebusker

Right-o,

Been tackling this Linux beast for some days now, and I have settled on Debian.

I don't have sound and I don't have internet, but I have Linux. It's a start.

This whole thing began as some sort of immersion therapy attempt to learn C. Got myself a K&R, a Debian Distro and have just downloaded Emacs with my *cough* Vista box.

The plan is to work my way through K&R, get my audio and net up with some help from LQ, et.al.,...

New Blinkenlights III: Blinkenlights on Ice!

I got wireless working on the Asus 1000HE. It was pretty easy: I installed the madwifi drivers and -tools from slackbuilds.org, as well as wicd from the Slackware /extra repository, rebooted and ...

... when I brought up XFCE, there was a new icon in the upper right corner of my screen. In seconds I was connected to my work network. Nice!!

New Blinkenlights II: Blinkenlights vs. Predator

Waaaallll, I now have Slackware 12.2 installed on the Netbook. My promise to keep (and then post) an exhaustive record came to naught, mainly because the process was a tissue of error (e.g. kinda boring unless you are interested in items like "the Slackware CD #2 I burned appeared to have corrupted sectors on it" or "the thing boots so damned fast that I have to be ultrafast to get into the BIOS screens before bloody Windows takes over").

I tried AlienBob's method...
